What next? United Kingdom lawmakers torn on fate of Brexit, and May

Abandoned placards are seen left outside the Cabinet Office on Whitehall after a march and rally organised by the pro European People's Vote campaign

European Union leaders handed prime minister Theresa May a last chance at a summit on Friday to ensure Britain quits the bloc in an orderly way, but her party and the British parliament remains deeply divided over the divorce deal she negotiated.

One EU source added: "We are ready".

British Prime Minister Theresa May would find it hard to take Britain out of the European Union without a Brexit divorce deal after parliament expressed a clear view that it is opposed to this outcome, her spokesman said on Monday.

The battle now shifts back to the British Parliament, which is split down the middle between supporters and opponents of Brexit.

Monday's parliamentary votes are aimed at giving lawmakers greater control over what the country does next and could definitively pull Brexit out of May's hands in the coming days.

Meanwhile, pro-EU lawmakers in Parliament aimed to seize control of the process with a motion later Monday that would let them hold a series of votes on alternatives to May's deal.

In agreeing to the postponement, European leaders hoped Britain's deadlocked politicians would find a solution to the crisis.

Anxious EU leaders agreed last week to delay Brexit's March 29 deadline and give Britain until April 12 to figure out how it intends to avoid simply crashing out of the bloc.

It seeks to change the rules of parliament on March 27 in order to provide time for lawmakers to debate and vote on alternative ways forward on Brexit, a process often referred to as "indicative votes".

The push for second referendum gained momentum over the weekend with with over a million people joined the "Put It To The People" March in London.

The key stumbling block in ensuring full Conservative support for the deal is the "backstop" solution for keeping the border open between Northern Ireland and European Union member Ireland.

Prime Minister May has said she is completely opposed to the idea of revoking Article 50.

If she is able to get a deal approved by Parliament in that time, the United Kingdom will have until May 22 to fully exit the EU.

The EU said it was confident of its preparations for a no-deal Brexit having tabled 19 legislative proposals - only two of which are still to be finalised.

To get it passed, she must win over at least 75 MPs - dozens of rebels in her Conservative Party, some opposition Labour Party MPs and the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which props up her minority government.

The commission warned that despite the preparations, a cliff-edge Brexit would cause "significant disruption for citizens and businesses" in the bloc.

"The country will be divided whatever happens and it is worse to be divided on a lie", a protestor told Reuters News Agency.

"In my constituency, the majority of people who have asked me about this don't want me to vote for the Prime Minister's deal".

"Brexit is like the Death Star of politics", Conservative legislator George Freeman said.
