UK leader under pressure to resign as she meets with Cabinet

A video grab from footage broadcast by the UK Parliament's Parliamentary Recording Unit shows Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May speaking in the House of Commons in London

British Prime Minister Theresa May conceded Monday that her twice-rejected Brexit divorce deal would be defeated by Parliament again if she put it to a new vote, though she said she still hopes to change lawmakers' minds and get the agreement approved.

He said MPs would want to find a consensus on the way forward, including a possible "confirmatory vote" on the PM's deal by the public - something Mrs May told MPs earlier she did not want because Remain would be on the ballot paper.

Ministers have warned it sets a "dangerous, unpredictable precedent" while Theresa May has said she will not necessarily be bound by the results - particularly if they are "undeliverable" by the EU.

"It's very, very, very hard to say at the moment, because what has happened with the whole Brexit process is that it has now become a crisis within the Conservative Party".

To hold a vote on May's deal on Tuesday, the government must present an emergency business motion by the close of business on Monday. Sterling fell as the chances of May's deal passing slipped.

Potentially. Amid an ever-greater sense of drift and gridlock in Theresa May's government, MPs have acted to take control of the timetable - and possibly the actual process of departure.

However, the prime minister said she was "sceptical" about this process, saying similar efforts in the past "produced contradictory outcomes or no outcomes at all".

Mrs May has not ruled out bringing back her deal for a third time this week, with Thursday considered the most likely.

Amid doubt about whether Britain will endorse the divorce agreement by Friday, the European Union says a no-deal Brexit on the new departure date, April 12, "is increasingly likely".

May had to delay Britain's original March 29 departure date because of the deadlock in London.

The passage of the Letwin amendment allows legislators to hold a series of indicative votes on various alternative Brexit options tomorrow.

Parliament Speaker John Bercow will announce at about 1700 GMT whether he has selected any amendments to be voted on.

Perhaps, by some miracle in the coming days, wiser heads in the United Kingdom government and parliament can construct a longer Brexit extension for a year or more that would allow a period of national reflection, resulting possibly in a new general election or even a second referendum, a so-called "people's vote", on whether to leave the European Union under now-known terms.

The four amendments that were taken off the table included another no-deal block, a pro-Brexit amendment and a call for a second referendum by the Independent Group and the Liberal Democrats.

The Leader of the Opposition, Jeremy Corbyn, commended Parliament for passing the Letwin amendment. If British MPs fail to pass the statutory instrument, it would create some "legal uncertainty" but it would not change the internationally-recognised Brexit date, which is now set as April 12 - with an offer of a further extension until May 22 if the withdrawal agreement clears the Commons hurdle in a third vote this week.

Meanwhile, The Sun newspaper used its front page on Monday to urge Mrs May to promise to resign in order to win support for her deal from Tory Brexiteers and the DUP.

"I think we're going to end up with a general election before the end of this year, probably in the summer", said Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen, who supports Brexit.

One of the attendees, former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, accused the government of lacking "gumption" and chickening out on delivering Brexit.

A spokesman for Mrs May later told reporters that she was still prepared to take Britain out of the European Union with no deal, but acknowledged that parliament would do everything in its power to prevent that.
