New Zealand PM Vows to Change Gun Legislation After Christchurch Mosque Massacre

50 people in two Christchurch mosques were killed

The suspect, 28-year-old Brenton Tarrant, has been charged with murder.

Video footage widely circulated on social media, apparently taken by a gunman and posted online live as the attack unfolded, showed him driving to one mosque, entering it and shooting randomly at people inside.

At a roadblock outside the Al Noor mosque on Sunday, about 40 people were standing in silence near scores of bunches of flowers.

Church services for victims of the attack were held around the country, including at Christchurch's "Cardboard Cathedral", a temporary structure built after much of the central city was destroyed in a 2011 natural disaster.

Suspect, charged for murder in relation to the mosque attacks, is lead into the dock for his appearance in the Christchurch District Court, New Zealand March 16, 2019.

"We are a Forum family and what affects one, affects all". He was not a resident of Christchurch, the prime minister added.

President Donald Trump, who has a record of Islamophobic rhetoric, online behavior and policies, tweeted out his "warmest sympathy and best wishes" to the people of New Zealand. But he said some people frustrated because "they want to get on with their grieving process".

"New Zealand is united in grief", she said. The judge said "it was reasonable to assume" more such charges would follow.

In contrast, President Donald Trump has repeatedly told mourning Americans in the wake of shootings that stricter gun control would make the country more risky, not less.

We send our thoughts and prayers to everyone in New Zealand today.

"As Christians we Cook Islanders have come to accept the church as a place of refuge, of safety and of comfort".

In a statement , Fiji's prime minister Frank Bainimarama also expressed his shock at the shooting and sympathy for the victims. Shackled and wearing a white smock, Brenton Harrison Tarrant, 28, appeared in court Saturday morning charged with murder .

City officials have brought in extra police to help reassure the Muslim community and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told reporters that the country's gun laws will change.

He said his government expressed compassion and solidarity over this "despicable act affecting our neighbours". "We will do whatever we can to help them heal and rise above this awful tragedy".

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Pacific Area Presidency also released a statement of support for Muslim communities and all others impacted by the Christchurch shootings. "I do believe they did prevent further attacks". In some ways, it felt like a first - an internet-native mass shooting, conceived and produced entirely within the irony-soaked discourse of modern extremism, a report in New York Times noted.

'Yes sister! Yes! Let's end this senseless violence, ' she tweeted.

A spokesman said the email did not describe the specific incident and that there was "nothing in the content or timing that would have been able to prevent the attack".

"Any loss of life at the hands of extremists regardless of religion, race or colour should be condemned in the strongest of terms". Police said the alleged shooter was arrested in a vehicle, which was carrying improvised explosive devices, 36 minutes after they were first called.

The Pacific Music Awards organisation in New Zealand also expressed its shock and solidarity over the shootings.

Another of Daoud's sons, Yama, was on the way to the mosque - to make up with his father after a small falling out - when he bumped into a friend outside who told him "your father saved my life".

Meanwhile, the final day of the Auckland secondary schools dance festival Polyfest was cancelled following the attacks.

"Those decisions have yet to be taken, but the Prime Minister has signaled that we are going to look at that issue", Parker told Radio New Zealand. "Just helping people is his main thing".
