Yemen warring sides divided over U.S. Senate vote on war

Muslim congresswomen criticize Saudi Arabia on Yemen

That change yielded a tangible outcome in a Senate vote to end US support for the Yemen war late in the last Congress.

Lawmakers in the 100-member chamber passed the document with 54 votes in favor and 46 against.

"Today we said enough - enough with this disastrous and unconstitutional war, enough with facilitating this humanitarian disaster, enough with giving the Saudis a blank check". Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., the resolution's author, told reporters before the vote.

The measure was co-sponsored by Sen.

Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Mike Lee (R-UT), among others, seeks to end any and all USA involvement in the Saudi-led conflict, including providing targeting support for Saudi airstrikes in the war-torn country.

"Congressional authority over war was created to avoid the type of situation that's been unfolding in Yemen, where unauthorized USA military support began without public debate or scrutiny", Martin said. The resolution calls for the withdrawal of armed forces from Yemen within 30 days of the enactment of the resolution. A handful of Republicans back then offered their support for the measure-or at least wouldn't block it from moving to a floor vote-because of their disgust with MbS and with the Trump administration for defending the Saudis and refusing to enact meaningful consequences for Khashoggi's murder.

It's expected to be vetoed by Trump.

Trump slams handling of Brexit by UK's May
The prime minister said while their views on Brexit differ, the relationship between the US and Ireland remains strong. Varadkar continued, "We shouldn't have a hard border, or anything to disrupt the peace process".

"We should not be associated with a bombing campaign that the United Nations tells us is likely a gross violation of human rights", Murphy said on the Senate floor Wednesday.

As Saudi-led coalition airstrikes claimed hundreds of lives over the years, mostly in northern Yemen where the Houthis are based, the US insisted it plays no role in targeting Yemenis. The resolution still must pass the House of Representatives.

USA forces previously provided targeting support for coalition airstrikes and even mid-air refueling for coalition planes, until that practice was reportedly discontinued late previous year. Mike Lee (R-UT), and 18 Republicans in the House voted on a similar resolution last month.

It is the second time the Senate has approved a measure that would curb US military involvement in Yemen.

"This is historic. For the first time in 45 years, Congress is one step closer to withdrawing USA forces from an unauthorized war", Sen.

Top Republicans Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn voted against the resolution.

"Now that the new Senate has passed the resolution, the House needs to pass the same clean version of the resolution to finally send it to the president's desk", Paul Kawika Martin, senior director for policy and political affairs at Peace Action, said.
