It will embolden Mrs May who will now seek to put her deal back before Parliament next week with the next "Meaningful Vote" penciled in for Tuesday as she can now hang the threat of a long delay to Brexit over the ERG and DUP.

But backbench Tory MPs - including former ministers - called for heads to roll and urged Mrs May to restore discipline within the Government.

Under a temporary scheme 87% of imports by value would be eligible for zero-tariff access - up from 80% at present.

In his concluding remarks, he said: "The Prime Minister's deal has failed, she no longer has the ability to lead, this is a rudderless Government in the face of a huge national crisis". "In the last 24 hours Parliament has decisively rejected both her deal and no deal".

The government also announced it will not introduce any new checks or controls, or require customs declarations for any goods moving from across the border from Ireland to Northern Ireland if the United Kingdom leaves the European Union without a deal.

Labour wants no-deal to be "taken off the table" and is likely to back an amendment - a legislative tool - tabled by MPs Jack Dromey and Caroline Spelman ruling out the United Kingdom leaving without an agreement at any stage in the process.

For Labour, shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer (below) said they will not be backing an amendment calling for a second referendum and argued Thursday's debate was about whether Article 50 should be extended.

May responded: "The deal that he's proposing has been rejected several times by this house".

Labour's Corbyn says May's Brexit deal not even close to changes promised

The House of Commons rejected Wollaston's amendment by 334 votes to 85, with some 25 Labour MPs voting for a second referendum in defiance of the party whip to abstain.

The decision to drop all checks to avoid friction at the UK's land border with the European Union will be temporary while longer term solutions are negotiated.

A No 10 spokesman said she did not discuss resigning after her latest defeat because her government had recently won a confidence vote in the Commons.

'The Government is in real problems because they are trying to fool the people into somehow believing that somehow or other the deal she has offered is the only one that is available'.

She will tell MPs whether she will vote for no deal or not when she opens Wednesday's debate.

He said: "'The unilateral statement is a weak Government trying to fool its own backbenchers because the European Union has not even signed up to it".

Leading Tory Remainers and Brexiteers, including Dominic Grieve and Boris Johnson, have suggested the prime minister's deal is now "finished" and other options must be brought forward.

Crispin Blunt said: "They should have resigned".
