Suspect in Christchurch mosque shootings to appear in court

Chicago Muslim groups step up security after New Zealand mosque attacks

New Zealand's Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, said the gunman meant to continue his attack if he hadn't been stopped.

Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer was criticized Friday evening after the initial statement he released about Thursday's attack on two New Zealand mosques failed to mention the word "Muslim".

Following the horrendous massacre, a 28-year-old Australian man, Brenton Tarrant, has been charged with murder.

Police on Friday stepped up security around mosques across New York State in wake of the mass shootings that killed almost 50 people in New Zealand.

At least one of those arrested is from Australia, said Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, calling the massacre the work of an "extremist right-wing, violent terrorist".

"Yes, we appear to primarily be dealing with one primary perpetrator but we want to make sure that we don't take anything for granted in ensuring New Zealanders' safety", Ms Ardern told reporters in Christchurch on Saturday.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also condemned the fatal shootings, saying the attack on people during prayers is "absolutely appalling".

The death toll stands at 49, and 39 people are being cared for in Christchurch Hospital.

Officials in New Zealand will be probing whether those behind deadly mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch should have been on the radar of authorities, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Friday.

He killed 41 people at Al Noor, before killing seven at another mosque nearby. When asked if they believed the same person was responsible for both attacks, he said he couldn't go into details but "we know nothing that will contradict what you've just suggested".

"He always seemed to embody the philosophies of the fitness industry which is that we are inclusive and we accept all shapes of sizes and all fitness abilities and we are here to help and improve and help people", she said.

According to the Independent, the suspects are alleged to have called people attending Friday prayers at a near-by mosque "terrorists'".

A spokesman said the email didn't describe the specific incident and there was "nothing in the content or timing that would have been able to prevent the attack".

The New Zealand premier said that he had been in possession of a "Category A" gun licence obtained in 2017.

New South Wales police commissioner Mick Fuller said police had visited Tarrant's childhood home in the town of Grafton, north of Sydney, and spoken to family members as part of their investigation.

Leading the competition, Central Districts will be presented with the trophy next week at Hamilton's Seddon Park, after the other contender, Canterbury, withdrew from their final match of the season following Friday's gruesome attacks, New Zealand Herald reported.

The president of the New Zealand Jewish Council, Stephen Goodman, said the synagogues were closed in solidarity with the Muslim community.

She said Tarrant, who has been arrested and charged with murder and committing a terrorist act, had allegedly used five firearms, including two semi-automatic weapons, two shotguns and a lever-action firearm.
