Former Champions Osaka, Halep Fall At Indian Wells While Venus Keeps Winning

Tennis: Osaka finds positives despite Indian Wells upset

The world no.23 is having a glorious winning streak of 9 matches after winning Dubai and following her run in Indian Wells where she is in the quarters.

Naomi Osaka (JPN) in her third round match as she defeated Danielle Collins (not pictured) in the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The 38-year-old Williams, who showed her mettle in the second round where she upset world number three Petra Kvitova, will meet unseeded German Mona Barthel in the fourth round.

The world number one was immediately on the back foot in her fourth-round match, as Bencic raced to a 5-1 lead in the first set.

Meanwhile, Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber stunned Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday, claiming his first career win over a world No. 1 player to reach the fourth round of the ATP Indian Wells Masters tennis tournament. "But I feel pretty good right now, because I think, given the circumstances, I tried my best and I don't really have any regrets".

It is the first time Vondrousova has beaten a top-five player. "I mean, she's the number one player in the world".

Halep responded after losing the opening set, dropping just three service points to level the match in fine fashion.

The women's field lost its top two seeds as Romania's Halep, the 2015 Indian Wells victor, fell to Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

Tennis: Osaka finds positives despite Indian Wells upset

On this unexpected victory, Bencic said, "I was really happy with the performance".

Naomi Osaka won her first career title at Indian Wells a year ago, propelling her to a career-best year in which she defeated Serena Williams for the U.S. Open title.

Bencic was the youngest woman to break into the top 10 since 2009 when she made the list in February 2016 as an 18-year-old, but a litany of injuries has stalled her progress.

That set the tone for Bencic, who was in impeccable form as she broke again for a commanding 4-1 lead against the two-time grand slam victor.

She will play either Ukraine's Elina Svitolina or Australian Ashleigh Barty in the last eight.

"I was running too much and too defensive", she said.

Kerber - the eighth seed - rallied from a set down to outlast qualifier Natalia Vikhlyantseva en route to the round of 16 on Monday.

When asked in her on-court interview whether she is feeling more relaxed on the court, Osaka said has enjoyed playing tennis for a while now and is grateful for the opportunity to be back at the Premier Mandatory event in the Southern Californian desert.
