U.S. Stock Indexes Apple Boeing

Materials had the biggest gains at 1.26 per cent as key commodities rose.

USA stocks eked out gains on Tuesday as benign February inflation data supported the Federal Reserve's dovish stance on future rate hikes, but Boeing's fall for a second straight session pressured the Dow and capped gains in broader markets. Apple and UnitedHealth each rose 1.1 percent.

"The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a price-weighted average, and it just so happens that Boeing is its highest-priced component, which means it is going to have some outsized influence on its performance", he wrote.

The UK on Tuesday joined the slew of countries grounding flights involving the Boeing 737 Max 8, the UK Civil Aviation Authority issuing a statement saying that the move is a "precautionary measure" in the present absence of "sufficient information from the flight data recorder". The S&P 500 was up 8.22 points, or 0.30 percent, to 2,791.52.

Gold for April delivery rose $7, or 0.5%, to settle at $1,298.10 an ounce on Tuesday after losing 0.6% on Monday.

Stocks are moving steadily higher in midday trading on Wall Street, putting the market on track for its third gain in a row.

Boeing weighed down the Dow Jones Industrial Average for a second day as shares in the aircraft maker fell amid safety concerns following another deadly crash involving its most popular plane. The S&P 500 rose 31 points, or 1.1 per cent, to 2,774, while the Nasdaq jumped 116 points, or 1.6 per cent, to 7.525.

However the blue-chip Dow pared losses, and all three indexes ended Monday higher boosted by a tech-led rally. The Nasdaq rose 16 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 7,576. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.5 percent to 28,776.10, while the Shanghai Composite dipped 0.8 percent at 3,035.15.

The S&P 500 index rose 6 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,789.

The S&P 500 last week registered its biggest decline since the end of 2018 after tepid job and other economic data, but the index is up about 11 percent for the year so far.

The Nasdaq is up 955.75 points, or 14.4 per cent.
