Facebook struggles into day two of global outage

Facebook was warned of alleged Russian meddling back in 2014

On Wednesday, the Times reported that U.S. federal prosecutors were conducting a criminal investigation into data deals Facebook struck with more than 150 technology companies such as Amazon.com Inc and Apple Inc.

In addition to looking at the data deals, the probes focus on disclosures that the company shared the user data of 87 million people with Cambridge Analytica, a British consulting firm that worked with US President Donald Trump's campaign.

That said, when the social networking sites were finally back in business, they took to Twitter to share the news with their followers.

'Yesterday, a server configuration issue made it hard for people to access our apps and services.

No cause has been given but Facebook said it wasn't a distributed denial of service or cyberattack. The interruption also affected gameplay for owners of Oculus VR headsets, a company that Facebook bought in 2014.

According to research firm eMarketer, Facebook controls around 22 per cent of the digital advertising market and it makes an estimated $127 million a day from advertisers.

Facebook suffered a huge outage starting on Wednesday that affected users worldwide.

After staying tight-lipped on the cause of the outage for almost 24 hours, Facebook early Thursday afternoon blamed it on a "server configuration change that triggered a cascading series of issues". It didn't elaborate on the server change.

"We're very sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone's patience", Facebook said.

Facebook estimates that 2.7 billion people use its apps, with more than 2 billion users posting and messaging on its services every day.

We've asked Facebook how it intends to resolve its issues with angry advertisers, but did not receive an immediate reply.
