Theresa May Promises U.K. Lawmakers Brexit Vote by February 27

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May leaves after a meeting with European Council President Donald Tusk at the European Council headquarters in Brussels Thursday Feb. 7 2019

Meanwhile in London, taking a cordial tone, Mrs May suggested further talks with the Labour Party leadership even as she said she did not see the advantage of permanent membership in the EU's customs union, a key demand Mr Corbyn is seeking in exchange for backing her troubled Brexit bill in Parliament.

She said the existing Political Declaration - the part of the Brexit deal setting out the goals for the future UK-EU relationship - "explicitly provides for the benefits of a customs union - no tariffs, fees, charges or quantitative restrictions across all sectors and no checks on rules of origin".

Signing the agreement in Bern today, global trade secretary Liam Fox said: "Switzerland is one of the most valuable trading partners that we are seeking continuity for, accounting for more than £32bn worth of trade a year". Mrs May will update MPs tomorrow.

That might mean that she's back before the end of this month with something concrete to vote on.

Laughing as he spoke, he said: "It is, in fact, the same protagonists for Brexit and a no-deal who do not have the courage either to put the issue to a peoples' vote".

But No 10 said it rejected any proposals to remain in a customs union with the EU.

Mrs May told the Labour leader: "It is good to see that we agree that the United Kingdom should leave the European Union with a deal and that the urgent task at hand is to find a deal that honours our commitments to the people of Northern Ireland, can command support in Parliament and can be negotiated with the EU - not to seek an election or second referendum".

Man United not a laughing stock any more, says Jones
Asked if it was the biggest challenge of his managerial career so far, he answered with an equal mix of caution and enthusiasm. One: It's Man United, you're expected to perform straight away. "It's something I'm looking forward to".

Last week, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn set out the conditions under which he would instruct his party to support an exit deal in parliament. "That's what the Labour Party agreed and we agree unanimously and I think there is a good deal of support for that in the Labour Party".

Mr Corbyn's demand is for a customs union that gives the United Kingdom a say on future trade deals the EU might strike - something Brussels appears unlikely to accept.

"We would have to be able to get out by a certain time and we would have to be able to get out of our own volition".

He added: "I am concerned that with 46 days to go the Prime Minister is simply running down the clock, mindful that the next EU Summit is March 21 and if she's is trying to run the clock down Parliament has to step in with a hard stop to say we are not going to accept that". "Since markets are linked up across the globe and suppliers based outside the European Union are also affected by a no deal Brexit", they said. I think you would need to have a time limit.

That leaves May battling to persuade a reluctant European Union to look again at the Irish backstop - a fallback policy created to prevent the resurrection of a hard border in Ireland if talks to find a long-term trade arrangement fail.

He said "there needs to be a day when Parliament says that's it, enough is enough".

His remarks to reporters came after talks with EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.
