Prince Philip gives up driving, licence in wake of crash

The Duke of Edinburgh has surrendered his driving license, Buckingham Palace announced Saturday, weeks after the 97-year-old was involved in a vehicle crash that left a female driver injured.

The Duke of Edinburgh has voluntarily surrendered his driving licence just over three weeks after he overturned his auto in a collision with another vehicle near the Queen's Sandringham estate.

Buckingham Palace confirmed Prince Philip relinquished his licence on Saturday.

The driver of the other vehicle, Emma Fairweather, suffered a broken wrist in the crash, but her nine-month-old baby boy - who was also in the auto - did not suffer any serious injuries.

Just two days later, he was caught on camera driving a new Land Rover - this time without a seat belt.

A Norfolk Police spokesperson said: "Suitable words of advice have been given to the driver".

Debris is seen at the scene where Britain's Prince Philip was involved in a traffic accident, near the Sandringham estate in eastern England, Britain, January 18, 2019.

Whether Elizabeth actually influenced the decision hasn't been made public, of course, but experts on the royal family suggested last month that she would be the one to make the call.

Heat trading Tyler Johnson, Wayne Ellington to Suns for Ryan Anderson
Johnson, 26, is averaging 10.8 points and 2.5 assists in 25.5 minutes per game mostly coming off the Heat's bench this year. Shooting guard Wayne Ellington will also be sent to the Suns in the trade, Shams Charania of The Athletic added .

"The investigation file for the collision has been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service for their consideration". Philip wrote Fairweather an apology on Sandringham House's stationary last month, per The Daily Mirror.

Some have also questioned why Prince Philip's licence wasn't taken and suspended following the crash.

In a letter dated January 21, Philip wished her a "speedy recovery" and said he "failed to see the auto coming", the Sunday Mirror reported.

He told Emma Fairweather, who suffered a broken wrist in the crash: "I can only imagine that I failed to see the vehicle coming, and I am very contrite about the consequences".

"I thought it was really nice that he signed off as "Philip" and not the formal title". I was pleasantly surprised because of the personalised nature.

The same witness said Philip had told police he was "blinded by the sun" when he turned onto the road without seeing the oncoming auto.

It [the decision] won't have been easy for him to make as it is a loss of independence.
