EU Sentenced to Failure for following Opposition, Says Maduro

Protesters gathered outside the Bank of England today calling for the return of Venezuelan gold

Opposition leader Juan Guaidó, the leader of the Venezuelan legislature, declared himself interim president and called for fair elections in response to the turmoil caused by Maduro's socialist government.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro (L) delivers a speech next to his wife Cilia Flores, on the signature campaign he launched to urge the U.S.to put a halt to intervention threats against his government, at Bolivar square in Caracas, Venezuela, February 7, 2019.

Maduro's government has accused Guaido, who has galvanized Venezuela's opposition, of attempting to stage a US -directed coup.

"The humanitarian aid has become a show to justify an invasion of the country", Maduro said.

Abrams said the longer Maduro stays, the more he will fall and the more misery there will be in Venezuela.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, a Venezuelan military boat carrying 100 tons (tonnes) of aid landed in Havana.

The Venezuelan president called on the opposition to stop ruining the country.

Britain, Germany, France and Spain and more than a dozen other European Union member states recognised Mr Guaido in a coordinated action on Monday, following the expiration of an ultimatum they gave for Mr Maduro to hold a new presidential election.

Under Maduro's direction, Venezuela has descended into economic chaos marked by hyperinflation, recession and shortages of basic necessities, including food and medicine.

Meanwhile, Venezuela's communications minister, Jorge Rodriguez, appeared on state TV claiming Colombian intelligence, the CIA and exiled Venezuelan opposition lawmaker Julio Borges were behind a plot to overthrow Maduro.

Maduro has thus far used the military to block the aid from entering Venezuela, denying that the country is suffering a humanitarian crisis and saying the delivery of the shipments would be a prelude to a US-led military intervention. The sanctions freeze $7 billion in US -based assets and target $11 billion of USA revenue to Venezuela's national oil company.

Dozens of volunteers prepared sacks of rice, canned tuna and protein-rich biscuits for malnourished children at a warehouse on the Colombian border on Friday as Venezuela's opposition vowed to deliver the USA humanitarian aid to their troubled nation, even if it means mounting a mass mobilization of their countrymen to carry it in.

"It depends on what they're offering", Farnsworth said.

He insisted that Venezuela is not facing a crisis, though during the news conference, the power went out twice.

Venezuela, already crippled by Maduro's economic policies, was plunged in political turmoil previous year when he greatly reduced the power of the opposition-controlled National Assembly and created a parallel parliament that gave more control to regions of the country where he is more popular.

Maduro also accused US President Donald Trump of orchestrating a coup.

"The main objective here is to bring humanitarian assistance- and if it must be done by military support, so be it", he said.

"Only this way can Venezuela realising lasting stability". They aim for "a peaceful solution and dialogue favorable for Venezuela".

Colombia has borne the brunt of the exodus of Venezuelans fleeing malnutrition and political turmoil in their once-prosperous nation, with about 800,000 flooding over the border and settling in Colombia.
