Sneak peek: The 230 brand new emojis coming to smartphones in 2019

It's happening. We're definitely getting a period emoji. The 2019 batch of emojis is just around the corner.

The Unicode Consortium, which curates the emojis, announced the new offerings this week.

If you already have trouble finding the exact emoji you're looking for, well, things are about to get a tad more complex. In the food category, there's a waffle, a head of garlic, an onion, a juice box, an oyster, and more. The victor, though, has to be the waffle topped with a flawless little knob of butter.

The Unicode Consortium's additions for 2019 include a flamingo, an otter, an orangutan, and a skunk.

After years and years of waiting (okay, maybe not that long, ) Emoji has finally chose to go with the flow and treat the world to a character that will truly allow us to express ourselves during that time of the month. And with the latest crop of tiny icons, smartphones around the world are about to become much more inclusive. Check out the full range here.

Included among this release are emoji for hearing aids, manual and motorized wheelchairs, prosthetic legs and arms, white "probing" canes used by the blind and vision impaired, service dogs, and guide dogs.

A new emoji being rolled out this year will depict a hand doing a pinching motion to depict a "small penis" and mock modestly endowed gentlemen.

All in all, the Emoji 12.0 standard will introduce 59 distinct new characters this year. There's also a touch more religious diversity, as mentioned above, with both a hindu temple and diya lamp emoji. As mentioned by the Emojipedia blog post, these 230 new emojis are finalised and will be coming to Android, iOS and other users.
