Leafs, Matthews reach five-year, $58.17 million extension

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed star centre Auston Matthews to a five-year contract extension worth $11.634 million annually, the team announced on Tuesday.

Ninety-three percent of the money in Matthews' contract will be paid out in signing bonuses, according to Sportsnet's Chris Johnston.

Matthews' five-year deal, which kicks in next season, has an AAV of US$11.634-million, for a total value of US$58.17-million.

Matthews has recorded 23 goals and 23 assists for 46 points in 38 games this season.

The Maple Leafs will hold news conference today at 4pm et to discuss Auston Matthews' new contract extension.

The contract makes Matthews the highest-paid player on the Maple Leafs (not to mention the NHL's second-highest paid player) - and few would argue that he doesn't deserve to be.

Matthews was eligible to sign an eight-year extension, however that would have complicated the team's long-term salary cap outlook. Marner's representatives have said they don't intend to negotiate a new contract during the season.
