Kids are using an unhealthy amount of toothpaste, CDC warns

"Analysis of 2013-2016 data found that over 38 percent of children aged three to six years used more toothpaste than that recommended by CDC and other professional organizations", said the report published on Friday.

However, the study showed that when teeth are forming, too much fluoride can lead to tooth streaking or spottiness or dental fluorosis. Despite what we know about the benefits of fluoride, there is a limit to how much toothpaste you should be squeezing onto your brush. The CDC and the American Dental Association recommend that children in that age group should use no more than a pea-size amount of paste per brushing.

For the study, the researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention included parents of more than 5,000 kids ages three to 15. Toothpaste with fluoride can be introduced when the child is two years old, the agency says.

The new study did not follow the kids through time or try to determine how many developed streaked or spotty teeth as a result of using too much toothpaste.

Children less than 3 years need to use only a rice grain size of smear of toothpaste on their brushes says the CDC and the American Dental Association.

The CDC study, which was based on more than 5,000 children from ages 3 to 15, also found that almost 80 percent of children included in the analysis started brushing later than recommended.

The CDC proposed guardians and parental figures to ensure that youngsters brush teeth frequently enough with suggested measure of toothpaste. This new survey reveals that most babies (80 percent) are made to start brushing after the age of 1 year.

"Fluoride use is one of the main factors responsible for the decline in prevalence and severity of dental caries and cavities (tooth decay) in the United States", the report stated, highlighting the advantages of the mineral but it added that too much of it could also lead to "visibly detectable changes in enamel structure such as discoloration". Additionally, participants were not asked to specify whether the toothpaste had fluoride. The information used for the evaluation was primarily based on parents' self-reporting. The main problem is ingesting too much fluoride while the teeth are still developing.
