MPs' Brexit vote gives PM mandate to renegotiate deal claims Cairns

The Latest: UK food retailers warn of price hikes, shortages

Conservatives from rival wings of the party proposed a compromise Tuesday that calls for Britain to seek a "new backstop" and an extended transition period of nearly three years after March 29 so that Britain and the European Union can work out a permanent new trade deal.

Another would let lawmakers vote on a set of alternate Brexit proposals to see which - if any - could muster majority support.

They are hell bent on a no-deal Brexit.

But in a win for the prime minister, MPs also voted for an amendment by Conservative MP Graham Brady, which said that the House would support May's deal if she was able to secure changes to the "backstop" - a controversial safety net by which the United Kingdom will remain in a customs union until a trade deal with the E.U. was secured. It also demands that Scotland - which voted in favour of remaining in the European Union - should not be taken out of the bloc against its will.

Parliamentary experts also warned that MPs' efforts may be unconstitutional.

"I hope that our friends in Brussels will listen and that they will make that change", he said.

Amid the bitter wrangling Queen Elizabeth II appeared to make a rare foray into politics last week, emphasising in a speech the need for Britons to come together to "seek out the common ground".

The diplomat said some of the problems caused by opposition to the so-called "Irish backstop" - created to keep open the EU-UK land border on the island of Ireland - by changing some of its demands on post-Brexit trade.

May reportedly told Tory MPs at a Monday meeting the government will support the measure and would order them to follow suit.

What does the passed amendment mean for Brexit negotiations?

"While we have been working closely with our suppliers on contingency plans it is not possible to mitigate all the risks to our supply chains and we fear significant disruption in the short term. if there is no Brexit deal", the letter said. She threw her weight behind a separate proposal to effectively rewrite the agreement she spent 18 months negotiating.

Bulmer believes an amendment tabled by the Labour chair of the Commons Brexit committee, Hilary Benn, calling for "indicative" votes to gauge support among MPs on a suite of Brexit options may be a way forward.

It comes ahead of crucial votes in Parliament on January 29.

There is also the small matter of the amendment being called by Commons Speaker John Bercow on Tuesday morning, although his hand may be swayed by the number of MPs backing it already.

Tuesday's ambiguous votes won't mark the end of Britain's turmoil over Brexit: There could be a rerun in two weeks. It was the biggest government defeat in the House of Commons for more than a century and prompted two weeks of soul-searching and debate over how to resolve the impasse inside the government.

May's spokesman said she backed a proposed measure that called for the removal of a controversial Irish border "backstop" arrangement written into the divorce deal.

Mr Cullinane added that: "Politicians in Westminster need to understand that the days of politicians in Britain pushing around Ireland, and threatening the Irish people that if they don't accept any changes to the backstop then there will be a hard border, have to be gone".

She tweeted: "There won't be any renegotiation of the Withdrawal Agreement & all the nonsense is a smokescreen whilst the clock runs down to No Deal".

May's spokesman said that she told ministers that the amendment "sets out in no uncertain terms our continued commitment to arrangements which avoid a hard border", and "gives us scope for a new discussion with the European Union about how best we achieve that".

Several Labour lawmakers and the pro-EU Liberal Democrats have proposed changes to this amendment so that it would call only for parliament to vote on holding a second referendum and that remaining in the EU should be an option in that referendum.
