Corbyn prefers Brexit deal to referendum

The British flag is seen at half mast

Chris Grayling said putting a stop to Britain's withdrawal from the European Union may end centuries of "moderate" politics the United Kingdom has enjoyed since the English Civil War as he urged his Conservative colleagues to back Theresa May's Brexit deal.

The vote had been scheduled to take place in December but was called off at the last minute by the prime minister, who was facing nearly certain defeat.

Vince Cable, leader of the pro-EU Liberal Democrats, said parliament would act to prevent a no deal Brexit, and could ultimately seek to prevent Brexit altogether.

Mr Hunt suggested that legally binding assurances from Brussels over the deal's controversial backstop arrangements should be enough to allay the fears of many MPs over the long-term impact of the agreement.

The government has made a fresh plea to MPs to get behind the deal.

"I still think that passing this deal is the responsible thing to do".

Senior shadow cabinet ministers have also said it will come soon, with shadow justice secretary Richard Brugon telling Sky News on Thursday it will be "a matter of days at the most".

"As politicians, we've got a responsibility to have a conversation with everybody that we now know that Brexit is going to be painful".

The Highlands MP added: "I would like the House of Commons now to take control because the Prime Minister has failed to give leadership".

Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said leaving the European Union without a deal would be catastrophic and his party would do everything it could to prevent that outcome.

It comes as Jeremy Corbyn comes under renewed pressure to table a vote of no-confidence in the government should May lose the vote.

'It will open the door to extremist populist political forces in this country of the kind we see in other countries in Europe, ' Mr Grayling told the Daily Mail.

In a significant shift of tone apparently created to win over hardline Brexiteers who have set their faces against Mrs May's deal, Mr Hunt warned that defeat next week would not necessarily provide MPs with the opportunity to choose their preferred version of Brexit.

'A majority of MPs are likely to come forward and say they want to stop no deal.

Pressed again on what happens if the deal is defeated, Barclay said he suspects the Commons would support something "along the lines of this deal".

'If EU intransigence persists, we must be willing to leave the EU at the end of March on World Trade Organisation terms.

Lawmakers in the United Kingdom are set to vote Tuesday on May's Brexit plan after she shelved plans for a December vote when it became clear she would lose that vote.

Corbyn said: "I think parliament did vote for an amendment to the Finance Bill this week, which indicated its opposition to no deal, but it isn't totally specific on it". However, with more than 100 Tory MPs opposing the deal, it is expected to be rejected.

Mr Corbyn said that if he forced a national election and his party won, Brexit may have to be delayed while they negotiated a new deal with the EU.
