British tourists feared dead after seven killed in Cuba bus crash near Guantanamo | Daily Star

Seven people are dead following a tourist bus crash in Cuba.

The bus, which was bound for Havana, crashed on a road between the cities of Baracoa and Guantanamo on Thursday afternoon. The region is mountainous with winding roads.

State media reported that 18 Cubans and 22 tourists from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Mexico and Canada were on board the bus when it crashed on a road between the cities of Baracoa and Guantanamo. The report did not specify if foreigners were among those in critical condition.

CNN's Patrick Oppmann reported from Havana and Hira Humayun from Atlanta.

"Cuban authorities have confirmed that no Canadians are among those who died in this bus crash".

"We are now providing assistance to two British nationals who were injured on the bus".

The dead include three Cubans and four tourists.

The driver said he lost control of the coach due to a wet road, claiming to have been driving slowly, the newspaper reported.

According to Radio Guantanamo, two Canadians were injured - a 56-year-old man and a 54-year-old man.

As well as the Britons, passengers' nationalities are listed as Dutch, French, Mexican and Canadian.

Roads in Cuba are poorly lit, narrow and poorly maintained. Thursday's wreck was the fourth major bus accident in a month. Previous year in all of Cuba there were over 11,000 auto accidents on their poorly-conditioned highways.
