Polish Police Arrest Huawei Executive, Accused Of Spying For China

Internal Affairs attends a government swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw Poland

Poland's Internal Security Agency has arrested a Chinese businessman and a Polish citizen over espionage allegations, officials said on Friday.

Poland's counterintelligence agency is believed to have searched Huawei's Poland headquarters, a local Orange branch, and the houses of both suspects.

Maciej Wasik, deputy head of Poland's special service, said that the operation that resulted in the arrest of the two suspects had been underway for a long time and was planned with care.

In mid-August, Washington enacted legislation banning U.S. government agencies from using Huawei products amid concerns that the company's mobile phones "pose an unacceptable risk to the [Pentagon's] personnel, information and mission". If convicted, they face up to 10 years in jail, he said.

Some European countries have followed the USA and began looking into whether using Huawei's technology could expose the country to China.

Two Huawei employees have been arrested in Poland for allegedly spying on the Chinese government's behalf.

Countries like the United States, Australia and Japan have blocked Huawei from building their next-generation, super-fast 5G internet networks.

Wang is a graduate of the Beijing University of Foreign Studies who formerly worked in China's consulate in Gdansk, according to his LinkedIn page. They took "documents and electronic data" from Huawei's office, said The Wall Street Journal.

China's foreign ministry said it was "greatly concerned" by the reports, and urged Poland to handle the case "justly". The company added it did not know if the investigation was linked to the employee's professional work, and that it would continue to cooperate with the authorities.

It's the latest high-profile criminal case for Huawei, coming after Canada's arrest of its chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, who is also the daughter of the telecom equipment company's founder.

The company said it "complies with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries where it operates, and we require every employee to abide by the laws and regulations in the countries where they are based". She was granted bail but remains in Vancouver under 24-hour surveillance.
