Boy who died in Border Patrol custody had flu, autopsy shows

After two Guatemalan children died in its custody US Customs and Border Protection is changing how it handles health care for migrant detainees

It was the second such death this month.

Nielsen said the death of migrant children in United States custody is rare, noting that in the fiscal year ending September 30, six migrants died under the CBP's auspices, none of whom were children.

US House of Representatives Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi called on Wednesday for the DHS internal watchdog, the Inspector General's office, to investigate Gomez's death.

Castillo concluded that the Trump administration must "immediately end its practice of warehousing families and children in the 'hierleras, ' make sure that all the families and children are provided safe and secure conditions while being considered for asylum, and guarantee that medical professionals are fully available to provide the ongoing professional medical assessment and needed care and support for them".

After two days in the port of entry along the U.S. -Mexico border, Felipe and his father were transferred to a Border Patrol station in El Paso. She also wants the U.S. Coast Guard to examine the medical programs offered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the agency that detained the 8-year-old and his father for a week.

The boy, identified by Guatemalan authorities as Felipe Gómez Alonzo, had been in CBP's custody with his father, Agustin Gomez, since December 18.

Felipe "always wanted a bicycle", and in the US he wouldn't have to endure the poverty and lack of opportunity in Guatemala, she said.

Felipe "always wanted a bicycle", Lucas said, and the family thought he would be better off in the United States.

Both Felipe and Jakelin came from rural communities with extreme poverty. On December 23, they were moved to the Alamogordo Border Patrol Station in New Mexico.

A former First Lady has apparently bested another former First Lady to become the most admired woman in America. Clinton came in third place with just 4% of respondents naming her as their most-admired woman for 2018.

According to local newspaper Pensa Libre, the father and son were detained on December 18 after crossing the USA border in El Paso, Texas.

With his father, he had traveled 2,000 miles from his home in Guatemala to reach the U.S. border, where the pair were apprehended by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents.

They'd been held twice the amount of time the agency's detention standards recommend. His mother told ABC News that he was not sick on the way to the U.S. nor was he sick at home. "But then he said he felt bad and his stomach ached", Felipe's stepsister told the AP.

Agustin Gomez, the boy's father, has two brothers in the United States he hoped to meet, his wife said. The boy was the second child to die in a USA detention center this month. Because an EMT is not on duty, agents take father and son back to the hospital.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the boy displayed signs of illness Monday and was taken with his father to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a cold and a fever and prescribed amoxicillin and ibuprofen.

Feinstein noted the deaths of the two children, along with reports of a 5-month-old in the hospital and children being murdered in Tijuana, and said that although she has contacted McAleenan, she has "not received answers to explain why these deaths occurred".

Eight-year-old Felipe Gomez Alonzo was eager to go to the United States, the boy's stepsister said in a telephone interview Thursday, excited to attend school, find a new home, and buy clothes for his siblings.

Agustin Gomez Perez was 47 and in debt, and that path would only deepen his obligations.

The description of the family's reasons for leaving Guatemala to try to enter the United States was one of escaping poverty, which is not a recognized reason for granting asylum in the country.
