United Nations chief Guterres calls for more action to tackle climate change

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres officially opened the COP24 summit in Poland with a grim warning, saying that the world is "way off course" in its plan to prevent catastrophic climate change. They aim to establish rules, figure out financing and build ways to verify that nations are meeting their commitments.

Negotiators at the United Nations climate talks got down to the nitty-gritty task Tuesday of finalizing the rules for the Paris accord, a landmark agreement by countries three years ago to curb global warming.

AFP also reported "smaller, poorer" countries will suffer the most from climate change and wealthier nations should "make good on their promises" made three years ago when they signed onto the Paris climate change agreement.

"These talks have been embroiled with blame game and had largely shifted away from the main goal of the convention and the Paris Agreement, which is people and planet", Singh said in an interview.

Guterres said climate change was already taking its toll.

At his address at the climate talks yesterday, Mr Attenborough said: "The people have spoken: leaders of the world, you must lead, the continuation of our civilisations and the natural world upon which we depend are in your hands".

The U.S.is also taking part, despite announcing past year that it's pulling out of the Paris accord.

To have any hope of reaching the 1.5C goal by the end of the century, it said emissions from fossil fuel use must be halved by 2030.

"Right now we are facing a manmade disaster of global scale, our greatest threat in thousands of years: climate change", he said.

"We are approaching risky climate thresholds, species are disappearing at an unseen rate, lands are degrading at an accelerated pace and global carbon dioxide emissions increased in 2017 after a three-year period of stabilization".

Attenborough, known for hosting nature broadcasts including the popular BBC series "Planet Earth", was chosen for the UN's "people's seat", representing those populations most affected by climate change. "They want you, the decision markers, to act now".

Stating that "we have no time for limitless negotiations", the Secretary-General insisted on the need to operationalise the Paris Agreement, and reminded Member States that 2018 is the deadline that they set for themselves to finalise the guidelines for implementation.

Representatives of some of the most powerful countries and biggest polluters will be conspicuous by their absence as the United States has said it is leaving the U.N. process and China was not expected to send its top politicians.

COP24, the UN's annual climate summit, kicked off in Katowice, Poland.

Ghana's delegates from the Ministries of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; Energy; the Environmental Protection Agency and other relevant fields are participating with their counterparts from less developed countries who, for lack of financial resources stand to suffer most from the effects of Climate Change.

"We achieved success in Paris because negotiators were working toward a common goal", and called for urgent collaboration to "ensure that the bonds of trust established in Paris will endure".

German Ambassador in Dhaka Peter Fahrenholtz stressed that the negative effects of climate change becoming perceptible for more and more people worldwide must immediately be taken seriously and must urgently be fought on a global level.
