Russian Jet Intercepts U.S. Navy Plane Over Black Sea

A pilot gets in a Russian Su-27 fighter jet prior to a rehearsal of an aerobatics show

On Nov. 5, 2018, a U.S. EP-3 Aries aircraft flying in worldwide airspace over the Black Sea was intercepted by a Russian SU-27.

Earlier, the press service of the US Naval Forces Europe-Africa Command published a press release saying that a US EP-3E Aries aircraft flying in worldwide airspace over the Black Sea was intercepted by a Russian Su-27 and that interaction was "determined to be unsafe". "The Russian Su-27 then proceeded to enter the flight path of the U.S. Navy EP-3, crossing within 10 feet and executing a sharp dive below, which resulted in violent turbulence for the U.S. EP-3 and its crewmembers", a Navy statement said.

The U.S. Navy claims that such actions endangered the crew of the EP-3, which reported turbulence and vibration. The incident reportedly lasted 25 minutes.

"The Russian Su-27 executed a hard right-to-left turn from the U.S. EP-3's right side with an excessive closure rate and came within five feet of the EP-3's right wingtip". The official release added that the EP-3 Aries hadn't provoked the Russian jet and urged all countries to adhere to the 1972 Agreement for the Prevention of Incidents On and Over the High Seas. United States officials say the aircraft was flying with its navigation transponder announcing its position, but neither the Russian pilot nor ground control operatives attempted to make contact. A USA spy plane Boeing RC-135U made a reconnaissance flight on the Russian western border on last October 19.

In turn, Russian Federation has denied the statement of the us authorities that the maneuver was carried out "unsafe".
