Hackers are selling access to these 81,000 private Facebook accounts

"We have contacted browser-makers to ensure that known malicious extensions are no longer available to download in their stores", Facebook executive Guy Rosen told the site.

Cost: The hackers are charging access to these accounts for 10 cents apiece. On 26 July this year, the government announced in Parliament that it has ordered a CBI probe into Cambridge Analytica's (CA) misuse of Facebook data.

The incident was first highlighted in September when a user with name FBSaler posted a message on an online forum: "We sell personal information of Facebook users". The perpetrators contacted the publication's Russian Service to claim that it could sell data from a staggering "120 million accounts" in its database. However, with so many extensions available, malicious parties have many options: compromise existing software through insiders or poor developer security; release their own seemingly benign plug-ins that provide a useful function alongside snooping; or buy extensions from developers and then update them to include malware. The advertisement listed online said that full access to personal messages can be obtained at $0.10 per account, and it listed 81,000 of the profiles as samples for buyers. A further 176,000 accounts also contained personal data such as phone numbers and email addresses, though these might've been obtained without actually hacking the accounts, by scraping the information from users who chose not to make it private. While most of the compromised accounts are from Russian Federation and Ukraine, some are also from US, UK, Brazil, and other nations. We have also contacted law enforcement and have worked with local authorities to remove the website that displayed information from Facebook accounts.

One example included photographs of a recent holiday, another was a chat about a recent Depeche Mode concert, and a third included complaints about a son-in-law.

A reply in English came from someone calling themself John Smith.

The BBC said there was reason to believe the 120 million claim was exaggerated.

He said that the information had nothing to do with either data leak.

The BBC noted that it's unlikely Facebook would've missed such a huge breach.
