Wanted at Tesla: A manager who can handle Elon Musk

Silicon Valley-based Musk created the electric carmaker and aerospace company SpaceX, which has been launching space rockets in an attempt to win commercial space transportation business in future - and realising Musk's talk of colonising Mars.

On April 1 he tweeted: "Tesla goes bankrupt".

Tesla filed a trademark for Teslaquila with the US Patent and Trademark Office earlier this week.

In a vote of confidence for Musk, shareholder T. Rowe Price Group Inc said in a regulatory filing on Wednesday that it had raised its stake by almost half to 10.2 per cent at the end of September from just under 7 per cent in June.

Mr Murdoch had been tipped as the lead candidate for the job, sources close to the talks told the Financial Times.

According to the Financial Times, "two people briefed on the discussions said Mr. Murdoch, who is now a non-executive director of Tesla, was the lead candidate for the job".

Elon Musk has denied a report in the Financial Times that James Murdoch is poised to replace him as chairman of Tesla. The company needs to actually be making a product to obtain the trademark.

Murdoch could not immediately be reached for comment. She has yet to rule on the agreements with Musk and Tesla. "What's exciting about the company and about Elon is the goals are so audacious", Murdoch said, as quoted in the FT report. Musk will remain as CEO.

Mr Murdoch, the younger son of Rupert Murdoch, has served on Tesla's board since 2017. In addition, he stepped down as chairman of United Kingdom -based satellite TV operator Sky following its sale to Comcast. He returned to Sky's board in 2016 after rebuilding his career at Fox.

"I would still have reservations about the time he would be able to allot to this", Keatinge said, referring to the possibility of Murdoch as Tesla chairman.

James Murdoch is now chief executive of 21st Century Fox, but will leave the role when the entertainment giant completes the sale of the majority of its assets to Disney, and will be succeeded by his brother Lachlan.

What started as an April Fools' Day joke that left a poor taste in Tesla Inc. investors' mouths may soon become a reality.

Shares are down 20 per cent since the beginning of the year.
