3 children with Polio-like illness In North Texas

6 Minnesota kids diagnosed with rare, polio-like disease

The Center for Disease Control started tracking AFM in 2014 and in one study, it found about a quarter of patients had fully recovered and regained use of their muscles after one year. They had symptoms of a respiratory illness in the week before developing symptoms of AFM.

Dr. Acosta said there is no cure or treatment at this time.

There are several ways people can contract AFM, including exposure to toxins in the air, genetic factors or through viruses such as poliovirus, non-polio enteroviruses, adenoviruses, West Nile virus, Japanese encephalitis virus and Saint Louis encephalitis virus, according to the agency.

A polio-like illness that primarily impacts children is on the rise across the United States.

And in 2018 alone, 38 new cases of AFM in 16 states across the country were confirmed by the CDC.

Michael charges into Southeast after slamming north Florida
National Hurricane Center forecasters warn the back half of the hurricane will continue to spread risky storm surge and winds. After there, the storm will move up through the Carolinas, hit by heavy rains form Hurricane Florence just a few weeks ago.

Dr. Rachel Herlihy, an epidemiologist with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, told Fox News most of 2018's confirmed Colorado cases happened in mid- to late August and September.

The illness causes a weakening of the nerves and resembles polio. There isn't a vaccine that could prevent AFM and there isn't a vaccine that causes the condition, medical experts said. Most cases are in children. It is actively investigating AFM cases, and trying to unearth more information about the mysterious condition. A 2-year-old girl was recently diagnosed in the Chicago area, and UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh confirmed that three children are now being treated for AFM at their facility. But those aren't the only signs: Other symptoms can include eyelid or facial drooping, difficulty moving the eyes, difficulty swallowing and slurred speech, according to the state health department. The condition was first described in 2014 and doctors assumed a virus was to blame, but they didn't know which one.

At this point, doctors aren't required to report cases to the state, so it's possible there are others.

The condition is still very rare, occurring in fewer than one in a million people in the US each year, the CDC says. So, just be sure to practice smart prevention measures such as getting vaccinated, washing your hands and avoiding bug bites.

In 2016, there were nine cases of AFM in Washington and three in 2017.
