United Nations climate report calls for immediate action to curb global warming

"Limiting global warming to 1.5°C compared with 2°C would reduce challenging impacts on ecosystems, human health and well-being, making it easier to achieve the United Nations sustainable development goals".

The report outlined the changes they believe need to be made for the temperature rise to be limited to 1.5ºC "The good news is that some of the kinds of actions that would be needed to limit global warming to1.5ºC are already underway around the world, but they would need to accelerate", said Valerie Masson-Delmotte, Co-Chair of Working Group I.

Like it or not, climate change and global warming are things that concern all of us.

More frequent or intense droughts, such as the one that almost ran the taps dry in Cape Town, South Africa, as well as more frequent extreme rainfall events such as hurricanes Harvey and Florence in the United States, are also pointed to as expectations as we reach the warming threshold.

No new technologies are necessary to limit warming, according to the IPCC.

The report makes it clear that climate change is already happening - and what comes next could be even worse, unless urgent worldwide political action is taken.

"Countries like India, with large populations dependent on the agricultural and fishery sectors, would be highly impacted", he said.

Although he didn't specify which reports he was referring to, he has often cited research by the conservative-leaning Heritage Foundation when trying to make the case that cutting carbon emissions would have little effect on global temperatures.

"We appreciate the hard work of the scientists and experts, many from the United States, who developed this report under considerable time pressure", an EPA spokesperson said in a statement.

"The world can not afford a warming of 2°C above the pre-industrial era".

Police interviewed the women, who said they had been instructed to clean the apartment by one of Brown's representatives. Brown was extremely agitated, acting aggressively, and yelling at security personnel when [police] arrived to the scene".

Not to mention a warming of 1.5°C would be associated with far more water stress, food scarcity issues, and climate-related poverty for hundreds of millions fewer people, particularly in poor countries, than a warming of 2°C.

Limiting warming to 1.5 degrees would also give the world a better chance of avoiding major tipping points like the collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. "We must reduce emissions as quickly as possible to keep 1.5 deg C of warming within reach", said Mr Andrew Steer, president and chief executive of the Washington-based World Resources Institute.

If global emissions continue at the current rate, the 91 authors of the report predict the world will reach 1.5 degrees by as early as 2040. By the year 2030, global human-caused emissions of Carbon dioxide would need to fall by roughly 45 percent relative to 2010 levels.

"Without an active participation of the U.S., this will be impossible".

"It shows that a 1.5C world will be a nightmare but a 2C world would be unthinkable".

"This important report testifies to the breadth and policy relevance of the IPCC", said Hoesung Lee, chair of the IPCC.

That benchmark is lower than the one set by the global Paris Agreement, which aimed to prevent the planet from warming by 3 degrees Celsius.

So how can we make sure that warming does not exceed 1.5°C and take us into highly unsafe territory?

"The developed countries must take the lead by rapidly de-carbonising their economies as well as by reducing consumption".
