Hurricane Michael weakens into a tropical storm over central Georgia

Michael strengthens into Category 4 | News

Hurricane Michael is one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the USA, and the proof is strewn across miles of Florida's coastline: Roofs and awnings peeled from buildings, pieces of homes scattered amid snapped trees and downed power lines, chunks of beaches washed away.

Hurricane Michael will also cause almost one million people to be without power, not just on the coast but inland as well in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency on Tuesday for 92 counties in his state, and a state of emergency also was announced in North Carolina.

The National Hurricane Center predicts Michael will stay a powerful and unsafe rainmaker as it moves across the U.S. Southeast and off the Mid-Atlantic coast before heading out to sea by Friday. "I know that there's a lot of bad stuff that happened out there on the Panhandle, but I think that we were very fortunate here", Lake City resident Tyler Flanagan said. The storm was moving northeast at 20 miles per hour with 75 miles per hour maximum sustained winds, just above the minimum speed to be considered a hurricane.

The storm continued on its destructive path, bringing heavy rains and tearing down trees.

Hurricane Michael blasted parts of Florida's Gulf coast with 155mph winds last night, threatening devastation in flood-prone communities and posing a critical pre-election test for the state's political leaders.

At 3 p.m. EDT (1900 GMT), the center of the storm was a few miles northwest of Mexico Beach and about 20 miles (30 km) southeast of Panama City.

The calculation changes if you take into account Puerto Rico, the United States island territory in the Caribbean that was devastated by Hurricane Maria past year.

The Cooter Stew Cafe starts taking water in the town of Saint Marks as Hurricane Michael pushes the storm surge up the Wakulla and Saint Marks Rivers which come together here on October 10, 2018 in Saint Marks, Florida.

Michael slammed into the Florida Panhandle Wednesday as the most powerful storm to strike the USA mainland in 50 years.

About 162,000 homes and business customers were already without power around mid-afternoon in Florida, Georgia and Alabama, utility companies said.

"I can not disappoint the thousands of people that are there - and the thousands that are going", he tweeted.

Patterson said about 2,500 of the town's 3,500 people were still there, including about 100 in a beachside area who ignored a mandatory evacuation order.

"On the forecast track, the core of Michael will move across central and eastern Georgia this morning, and then over southern and central SC later today".

National Hurricane Center Meteorologist Dennis Feltgen said: "We are in new territory".

"Oh my God, what are we seeing?" said evacuee Rachel Franklin, her mouth hanging open.

A hurricane warning remains in place from the Alabama-Florida border to the Suwannee River in Florida.

Authorities said at least one person has died, a man killed by a tree falling on a Panhandle home.

Rainfall will add to issues of the storm surge and deadly winds with upwards of 8 inches, and in isolated areas 12 inches, expected to fall. Sustained winds have been measured at up to 155 miles per hour, which is at the extreme upper limit of what weather experts expect from a Category 4 storm.
