Bangladesh introduces death penalty for traffic deaths

More than 100 students hurt during violent standoffs with police in Bangladesh, hospital says - but police deny anything happened

The incident comes amid massive protests over road safety.

The movement has developed into a major standoff, and there have been scenes of violence in the streets of the capital, Dhaka, home to 18 million people.

The protests began when young people took to the streets peacefully after a boy and girl were killed by a speeding bus last Sunday. It started when two teenagers died after being hit by buses racing with each other to pick up passengers.

The move may be an attempt to try and limit the ability of students to mobilise or spread growing online outrage over how the government has handled the protests, hours after police and unidentified men wielding sticks and stones clashed with students.

The protesters have been demanding safer roads in Bangladesh, where corruption is rife, making it easy for unlicensed drivers and unregistered vehicles to ply on the roads.

Rights group Amnesty International called on the government to stop its "violent crackdown" on "overwhelmingly peaceful student protestors".

How did things turn violent?

Bus services in the city and on routes to elsewhere in the country were cancelled.

Police denied they fired rubber bullets or tear gas at the protesters on Saturday.

An official US Embassy vehicle, which was transporting US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat, was attacked in the Mohammadpur district of Dhaka late Saturday "by a group of armed adult men, some on motorcycles", the embassy said in a statement on Sunday.

A vehicle carrying USA ambassador Marcia Bernicat was also attacked by "armed men" but she escaped unscathed, the embassy said.

Defying government warnings to end the protests, some university students on Monday threw bricks at police and others tried to take processions through the city.

"We are interrogating him for giving false information to different media and for provocative comments", police official Moshiur Rahman told AFP, stressing he had been detained not arrested.

How have the students organised themselves?

A photographer for an worldwide news organisation was among those beaten.

"As per the proposed law, an accused has to face five years of jail for negligent driving (leading to death)", Law Minister Anisul Huq told reporters after a cabinet meeting chaired by Hasina.

According to Al Jazeera, the government blocked mobile phone signals for 24 hours in a bid to halt the riots in the capital and across the country.

Ms Hasina on Sunday urged the students to go home.

The pro-government activists, members of a political youth league, also attacked at least five journalists, including an Associated Press photographer who was briefly hospitalised with a head injury. We chased them to save the office.

The United Nations said it was concerned for the safety of the young people caught up in the protests.

The Embassy said an estimated 500 Filipinos are living in Bangladesh.

The US embassy in Bangladesh has also criticised the police response to the protests in a strongly-worded statement.
