North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit: Trump hails alliance spending promises after crisis meeting

US President Donald Trump and First Lady of the US Melania Trump arrive for a working dinner at The Parc du Cinquantenaire- Jubelpark Park in Brussels

Trump had spent his time in Brussels berating members of the military alliance for failing to spend enough of their money on defence, accusing Europe of freeloading off the U.S. and raising doubts about whether he would come to members' defence if they were attacked.

"There is a communique that was published yesterday". He said he was "extremely unhappy" with the situation, but that alliance members have upped their commitments to defense spending in response to his complaints.

Trump added, "All NATO Nations must meet their 2% commitment, and that must ultimately go to 4%!" "They pay only a fraction of their cost". They're happy to do it.

Before meeting with Putin, Trump is visiting London and the United Kingdom - where many large protests are planned against his policies.

"Throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart", the president tweeted.

"The President said his meeting with the Russian leader may be the easiest" part of his European tour, with massive protests expected over his presence in London. "They are going to up it at levels they have never thought of before". "I'm very strong on immigration".

NATO's Brussels Summit witnessed "strong debates on defense expenditures", showing that the rupture within the alliance is growing. That would mark a significant milestone for the alliance. Eventually, he suggested, "we will go much higher than 2 percent", providing no evidence for his assertion.

Asked about pressures on countries with weaker finances, he said, "We have many wealthy countries with us today but we have some that aren't so wealthy and they did ask me if they could buy the military equipment, and could I help them out, and we will help them out a little bit", he told a news conference.

Mr Trump is annoyed because only the US, Britain, Estonia and Greece now meet the two per cent target, with America spending the most at 3.5 per cent.

Trump gears up for meeting with "competitor" Putin after rocky North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit
In 2011, when the United States was still heavily involved in Afghanistan and Iraq, defence spending was at 4.78% of GDP. Another big beef Trump seems to have with his allies are are their ties to Russian Federation (yes, seriously).

People present said he raged that allies, notably Germany, did not make vast increases in their defence budgets.

THE FACTS: There's no outward sign that Trump's aggressive posturing in recent days has changed much for the alliance other than bruise its veneer of unity. There may be considerable wiggle room for leaders to do nothing new, many officials said. When pressed about the specifics of the agreement reported by Trump, the secretary general simply said the allies had agreed to "redouble our efforts" with "a new sense of urgency".

Trump said he wanted "peace all over the world, that's my goal", and he wanted to achieve this by building up the military, with his dream to have the best military equipment in the world and never have to use it.

"We understand that this American president is very serious about defense spending, and this is having a clear impact".

"He said they must raise spending by January 2019 or the United States would go it alone", one person said of the clash at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation headquarters when Trump spoke in a debate that was meant to move to other matters after rows over spending on Wednesday.

Trump also reiterated his criticisms of Germany, which he said earlier this week was "totally controlled by Russia" because of a deal for a natural gas pipeline.

They then moved on to President Trump's accusation that Germany is beholden to Russia because they get there energy needs from Russian companies.

Trump later called the meeting a "success".

He also said he thought spending of 4 percent on defence - similar to the U.S. level - would be the right level. Leaders explained to Trump that because they were beholden to lawmakers, they could not make firm pledges on the spot.
