Kevin Anderson Upsets Roger Federer at Wimbledon

Roger Federer Rafael Nadal Wimbledon

Roger Federer and his ideal run through the 2018 Wimbledon tennis tournament thus far next face Kevin Anderson in Wednesday's Men's Singles quarterfinals match.

Federer won the first two sets, 6-2, 7-6 (5) before Anderson rallied to win the next two sets, 7-5, 6-4, becoming the first player at Wimbledon this year to take a set from Federer.

Serving at deuce and 3-4, Anderson yanked Federer from one corner of the court to the other with blistering groundstrokes until the Swiss ended the 21-shot rally by netting yet another backhand.

Roger Federer, meanwhile, comfortably defeated Adrian Mannarino in a 6-0, 7-5, 6-4 victory to reach the quarterfinal stage. The South African took advantage, holding in his last 26 service games and putting constant score pressure on Federer's serve.

Anderson had 28 aces in the victory, compared to Federer's 16 aces.

Federer responded, quickly breaking back before taking the set in a tie-break.

But Anderson is not letting his thoughts run away, drawing on his experience of reaching the final of last year's US Open. He won only 3 of 12 break points on Anderson's serve in the match.

"I felt like I was just trying to keep myself very highly motivated, a lot of belief in myself, and said, 'Today is going to be my day.' Obviously it came very close to it not being my day", Anderson said.

Earlier, three-time champion Novak Djokovic reached his eighth semifinal with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Japan's Kei Nishikori in a stormy Centre Court clash. Djokovic grunted and groaned, he took on chair umpire Portugal's Carlos Ramos, who he accused "of double standards", and was handed two code violations, in the second and fourth sets, for racket abuse and time violations, but he also produced razor-sharp tennis.

"It's one of those average days you have to try to win the match, and I just couldn't get it done".

The 32-year-old is playing in the last eight at the All England Club for the first time since finishing runner-up to Djokovic in 2011. And then came opportunity.

Anderson will now move into his first semi-finals at the tournament; taking on the victor of John Isner and Milos Raonic for a place in a final against what may be Rafa Nadal or Novak Djokovic. When Nishikori let his own racket fly in the fourth set, he wasn't chastised, which prompted Djokovic to yell "double standards" toward Ramos - drawing boos from fans.

Del Potro said: 'I think I will be in good condition. The 32-year-old African is the highest-ranked player from South Africa. Maybe I don't have a good record with him, but I always enjoy playing him'. It wasn't until the Italian Open in May that he seemed to find his form again, ultimately losing in the semifinals to Rafael Nadal in the semifinals.

"Honestly, I'm not sure", the 20-times Grand Slam champion said when asked where it had all gone wrong. For me, this is very hard to understand.

"I don't think it really mattered, to be honest", he said.
