'Dangerous' crocodile caught in Australia after ten years on the run

The captured crocodile was tightly bound to the cart. Its eyes were covered and mouth muzzled

Following a almost decade-long hunt, a massive saltwater crocodile has been captured in northern Australia, according to wildlife authorities.

A Department of Tourism and Culture spokeswoman said rangers removed the 600kg croc from a trap at a private property at Taylor's Park.

"We've called it a lot of things over the years because it's been so hard to catch", Burke said.

Ranger John Burke said authorities had been hunting the large crocodile in the area for a decade.

A trap was then set a couple of weeks ago near Katherine River - and the crocodile, dubbed "big fella", swam right into it.

Weighing up to 600 kg (1,322 lb), the 60-year old crocodile is the biggest ever removed from the Katherine River in the remote Northern Territory. "You've got to have a bit of respect for it".

Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife posted on Facebook on Tuesday that rangers captured, sedated and moved a 4.7-meter crocodile.

So far this year, 187 of them have been captured in the Top End - the northernmost part of the Northern Territory, according to the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife website, which advises visitors to be "crocwise".

The 4.7-metre male saltwater croc was caught in the Katherine River in the Northern Territory on Monday afternoon.

Since crocodiles became a protected species, crocodile numbers in the Northern Territory have exploded from 3,000 to an estimated 80,000 to 100,000.

The government said that each year, rangers remove about 250 "problem crocodiles" from the area.

A 15-foot, 1,300-pound saltwater croc was captured in Australia. Crocodiles are farmed for their meat and hides, but large and battle-scarred crocs are usually unsuitable for the handbag market.
