Will the US Senate vote for Trump's Supreme Court nominee?
- Leon Maldonado
The landmark healthcare law has been the subject of a series of intense legal battles, and many observers expect more decisions on the ACA's future to make it to the Supreme Court during Kavanaugh's tenure.
In addition, Blumenthal contended that "Judge Kavanaugh, if he is a justice, would be the swing vote" in deciding if Trump could eventually pardon himself.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions. Kavanaugh would be less receptive to abortion and gay rights than Kennedy was.
"I am proud that a majority of my law clerks have been women", Kavanaugh added.
Kavanaugh is a longtime fixture of the Republican legal establishment. Since 2006, he has been a judge on the federal appeals court in Washington. "While the House of Representatives is not involved in the nomination process, I'm hopeful the White House will work with the Senate, including Senators Collins and King, on approving a Justice for the Supreme Court who will serve Mainers and the Nation dutifully and honorably".
The Utah Republican said Monday of Barrett: "I don't think she's going to be the one who's chosen this time".
While conservatives debated the semantics of Kavanaugh's decision, Democrats and liberal activists were overwhelmingly alarmed by the nomination. "I think it's a damn shame that people spend millions of dollars in political campaign for supreme court justice. I am deeply honored to be nominated to fill his seat on the Supreme Court".
Corker says Kavanaugh served "honorably" on the D.C. Circuit Court and "understands the importance of upholding the Constitution".
Kavanaugh would keep the number of Catholics on the high court at five. "Trump saw Kavanaugh as his Get-Out-of-Jail Free card, and he saw that it was too good to pass up". In the case decided Monday that had to do with attorneys' fees, there would be no majority if Kavanaugh were to withdraw.

All three states lean heavily Republican. Chris Coons said at a press conference Tuesday along with other Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee. But Kavanaugh went further in his dissent, saying the net neutrality rule violated the First Amendment, which he wrote "bars the Government from restricting the editorial discretion of Internet service providers".
Jones was among the Democratic lawmakers invited to the announcement at the White House but did not attend.
"They didn't care who the president appointed".

Starbucks Says It Will Phase Out Plastic Straws

Thai Cave Rescue: Sixth Boy Leaves, Six Soccer Players and Coach Remain
The rescued kids are now in the hospital, where they should receive the proper care before being released to their families. A retired Thai navy SEAL died Friday after he ran out of oxygen while placing compressed-air tanks along the exit route.
And imagine this: Three of the justices at the time, including the chief justice, had been nominated to the court by the same Republican president whose fate their votes sealed. "I look forward to following the U.S. Senate confirmation process".
The Affordable Care Act is "wildly popular and necessary in the reddest of states", said Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of NY, in an interview Tuesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe".
Schumer says the administration's action highlights the stakes for senators. But court watchers agreed that Kavanaugh's track record as an appellate judge is worth studying for signs of his impact on the Supreme Court.
"President Trump is a realist about the world", Pence said.
Republicans and Democrats are at odds over Kavanaugh and with the Senate closely divided, his path to confirmation is treacherous.
With a short list of candidates already in hand, Trump has moved quickly to select his nominee, just 12 days after Kennedy announced his retirement. In fact, the only member of "the Supremes" who isn't Catholic or Jewish is Justice Neil Gorsuch, who is Episcopalian.
Red state Democrats also kept an open mind on Tuesday.
"The Supreme Court is entrusted with the safeguard of the crown jewel of our republic, the Constitution of the United States", Trump said. The race is not expected to be competitive.
Bob Salera, a campaign spokesman for Senate Republicans, said Casey has "given up any pretense of being a moderate voice" by opposing Trump's nominee sight unseen.
Signaling the fight ahead on abortion rights, Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said in a statement: "There's no way to sugarcoat it: With this nomination, the constitutional right to access safe, legal abortion in this country is on the line". If confirmed, Trump's choice would solidify the high court's conservative majority and continue the president's push to shift the federal bench to the right.
Trump spoke to reporters Sunday afternoon as he concluded a weekend in New Jersey spent deliberating his decision at his private golf club.
