Local Jobless Rate Rises Slightly

Bank of Canada

Stats Canada says the unemployment rate rose to 5.5 per cent last month, up from 5.3 per cent in May. The local jobless rate in June 2017 was 7.0 per cent.

It went from 5.9 per cent in May to 5.8 per cent in June, according to figures from Statistics Canada.

In all, 22,700 part-time jobs and 9,100 full-time positions were created in June.

Canada saw a healthy gain of 31,800 jobs in June, but it wasn't enough to keep the national unemployment rate from rising to 6.0 percent from 5.8 in May, the six per cent barrier for the first time since last October, when it was 6.2.

While the overall employment picture is positive, the region's high-tech sector shed 2,700 jobs - the steepest single-month decline since February 2015.

This is published unedited from the PTI feed. The public sector gained 11,800 jobs and the private sector lost 2,000.

The rate of employment in the region increased by over two percent, from 68.5 to 70.6 percent, making it the economic region with the highest rate of employment in B.C. Despite that, Northeast B.C.'s unemployment rate was the second-highest of any region in B.C. for the second straight month.

More people were employed in construction, natural resources, and manufacturing.

Youth unemployment increased to 11.7 per cent last month, up from 11.1 in May. At the same time, employment decreased in accommodation and food services, and in agriculture.

"Not too shabby", TD senior economist Brian DePratto said in a note.

The Canadian dollar initially strengthened to C$1.3095 to the USA dollar, or 76.37 US cents, up from C$1.3137, or 76.12 US cents, before later giving up its gains.

DePratto stressed he didn't see anything in the jobs report to deter Poloz from hiking the rate next week.

Separately, Statscan said Canada's trade deficit in May grew to $2.77 billion from $1.86 billion in April.

The May numbers show that imports expanded 1.7 per cent, while exports dipped 0.1 per cent.
