Tuberculosis spill triggers hospital evacuation in Baltimore

Baltimore: hospital evacuated due to tuberculosis threat – reports

According to WBAL, the incident involved a small vial of a frozen sample of tuberculosis being dropped onto the floor and having its lid fall off.

Dr. Landon King, executive vice dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, proclaimed there was no risk of contamination, says the Baltimore Sun.

Two buildings at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, were evacuated on Thursday as people may have been exposed to tuberculosis, according to several media reports.

But hospital authorities later said that there was "zero risk" to patients and hospital personnel and that testing would not occur.

In a statement released Friday, Ken Willis, a spokesman for Johns Hopkins Medicine, said the latch on the transportation container "failed due to pressure from a secondary interior container holding dry ice".

Armed, barricaded suspect may be former NBA, UCLA basketball star
Roughly six hours after tweeting that SWAT had arrived, officers entered the home and declared the suspect dead at the scene. However, the LAPD released a statement via Twitter saying they were unsure if the suspect was hit by gunfire.

The Baltimore Fire Department was dispatched to the scene, placing a perimeter around the building while the scientists and hazmat crews figured out how to handle the incident. Sometimes the germ tends to lie dormant within the body, without causing the disease or spreading.

Tuberculosis, or TB, is a serious airborne infection.

TB is spread through the air and typically attacks the lungs. Because of its knack for picking on the immunocompromised, TB is much more unsafe and occasionally fatal for people who also have HIV.

The Baltimore Fire Department said they received a call shortly after noon to say that a tuberculosis sample had been spilled.

Tuberculosis is brought around by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria and has reportedly infected around ten million people and has killed around 1.7 million globally in the year 2016 alone. If the person is not treated properly then the disease can be fatal. However, in the United States, the disease is gradually becoming rare.
