US envoy Pompeo to return to North Korea this week

Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un pose for cameras

USA intelligence officials, however, are telling reporters that North Korea continues to develop nuclear missile programs, research facilities, launch capabilities and fuel production, despite Kim's pledge to denuclearize during his June summit with Trump in Singapore.

It's been less than a month since President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held their historic summit in Singapore, and doubts are emerging, even multiplying about North Korea's intentions when it comes to dismantling its nuclear program. He told VOA that North Korea appears to be finishing a factory that is known for making parts for solid-fuel missiles.

The official said that the North Koreans had largely refused in talks with Sung Kim to respond to attempts to define the key terms of an eventual agreement, including the words complete, verifiable and irreversible.

NBC quoted five unidentified USA officials as saying that in recent months North Korea had stepped up production of enriched uranium for nuclear weapons, even as it engaged in diplomacy with the United States.

The new intelligence, described by four officials who have seen it or received briefings, is based on material gathered in the weeks since the summit.

"This assessment says there is more than one secret site". Some aspects of the updated intelligence were reported Friday by NBC News.

Sung Kim, the USA ambassador to the Philippines and a veteran of nuclear negotiations with Pyongyang, met with North Korean officials on Sunday, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday.

USA intelligence agencies have for at least a year believed that the number of warheads is about 65, as reported last year by The Washington Post.

Mr. Hecker and two colleagues at Stanford's Center for International Security and Cooperation compiled an estimate of North Korea's nuclear arsenal and developed a six- to 10-year timeline to dismantle the program fully. That site is estimated to have produced fissile material for as many as a couple of dozen warheads. That site is believed by most officials to have twice the enrichment capacity of Yongbyon. But U.S. intelligence agencies believe Pyongyang is concealing an unknown number, including smaller tactical nuclear weapons, in caves and other underground facilities around the country.

In recent years, the United States, through imagery and computer hacking, has improved its intelligence collection in North Korea.

He said the administration was well-aware of North Korea's track record over the decades in dragging out negotiations with the U.S.to continue weapons development. The Post is withholding details at the request of intelligence officials.

"I'm sure that the Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, will be discussing this with the North Koreans in the near future, about, really, how to dismantle all of their WMD and ballistic missile programs in a year", Bolton added.

"At one point at our lunch, Kim Jong-un said to me, 'You know, the two of us have to get a picture together".

"I think that's an interesting statement", he said.

"If you think Russia's a threat, ask yourself this question: Why is Germany spending less than 1.2 percent of its GNP [on defense]?" he said.

According to the daily, evidence collected by USA intelligence points to preparations to deceive the United States about the number of nuclear warheads in North Korea's arsenal as well as the existence of undisclosed facilities used to make fissile material for nuclear bombs.

White House national security adviser John Bolton said on Sunday the bulk of North Korea's weapons programs could be dismantled within a year, "if they have the strategic decision already made to do that". "North Korea has a long history of cheating on agreements that it's made with previous administrations", she said on CNN's "State of the Union".
