Coffee drinking connected to lower risk of death, study finds

Another Cup? More Coffee Could Be Linked to Longer Life Span

The live-giving properties of a cup of joe even stayed in place for the survey's 10,000 respondents who drank eight cups or more a day.

The team at the National Cancer Institute used data from people taking part in a large genetic study in Britain called the U.K. Biobank.

Interestingly, even people who admitted knocking back eight cups or more a day were less likely to die than those who refrained from drinking coffee at all. So if you drank that coffee, you had a slightly lower chance of dying during the 10 years the study examined. A recent study that brewed up good news for coffee drinkers involved British volunteers.

Researchers say this suggests caffeine wasn't responsible, but as the study was observational more research is required to determine what is behind the benefit.

Amla is loaded with vitamin C that is known to build your body's defence mechanisms against diseases and infections.

That's because a massive new British study, examining the coffee habits and longevity of almost 500,000 adults, says there's an unmistakable across-the-board increase in longevity among people who drink lots of coffee.

"There are many potential beneficial compounds in coffee - there are literally hundreds and thousands of compounds in coffee", he said. Go ahead - it might boost your chances for a longer life.

Researchers accessed genetic data for 403,816 of the 498,134 study participants to create 2 genetic "caffeine metabolism" scores (CMSG) by "adding the number of alleles of single base changes, or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), previously associated with blood caffeine metabolite levels, and the map near genes with plausible roles in caffeine metabolism".

Conducted over a decade, the study found that coffee drinkers lived longer on average than those who abstained - whether they drank instant, ground, or decaf. Researchers noticed an inverse association between drinking coffee and the risk of death, regardless of whether individuals metabolized it quickly or slowly. An editorial by Eliseo Guallar from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, said there is no way to know if coffee prevents chronic disease and reduces mortality because there are too many factors to weigh like why people start drinking coffee.

In the end, there were 14,225 deaths due to cancer (58 percent); cardiovascular disease (20 percent) and respiratory disease (4 percent).

There are several possible explanations for the health benefits of coffee.

Of course there has also been evidence to suggest that coffee could be bad for you.

But, "drinking coffee is not a miracle in a cup, and is unlikely to prevent the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle, such as the typical Western diet or smoking tobacco", Heller noted.
