Australia loses final ODI against England to suffer series whitewash

England's Jonny Bairstow celebrates reaching a century during the one-day international cricket match against Australia

It took England just four balls to lose their first wicket when the in-form Jason Roy, fresh from his 101 in the fourth ODI at Chester-le-Street on Thursday, was bowled attempting a big hit off left-arm spinner Ashton Agar.

Struggling at 114-8, England looked finished before Buttler and Adil Rashid shared a ninth-wicket partnership of 81.

Earlier, off-spinner Ali took an ODI best four for 46 as England, the number one-ranked side in this format, dismissed world champions Australia, who won the toss, for 205 inside 35 overs.

Two balls later, Stoinis was out for nought when a mistimed sweep lobbed gently to Ball at short fine leg.

Head had just passed fifty when he departed, tamely chipping Liam Plunkett to England captain Morgan at mid-wicket.

And 90 for three became 97 for four when Marsh, who had made two hundreds this series, exited for eight, stumped by Buttler off Ali.

Buttler was at it again just eight balls later and sent Paine back to the pavilion with a fantastic run out as the Australian skipper attempted to sneak a quick single.

Meanwhile, former PA information minister Nabil Amru criticized the PA leadership for cutting its ties with the U.S. administration.

Travis Head (56) hit his third successive half-century, but got out soon afterward for the third time too, and D'Arcy Short was left unbeaten three runs short of his maiden ODI 50.

Following a stunning series of victories over the past fortnight - including the smashing of their own world record ODI score at Trent Bridge - Eoin Morgan's side will be brimming with confidence. They also made three changes to their side and England have also gone in with three changes.

And when Alex Hales was caught by Tim Paine off Kane Richardson (3-51) for 20, England was 5-66.

But Buttler held firm and found support from Rashid before he was caught in the deep off the bowling of Stoinis.

'We were determined to win the series 5-0, ' Man of the Match Buttler said. Jake Ball came in as No. 11 and defended successfully as Buttler hit the winning runs in the series finale.

To be fair to Australia, though they haven't always batted as a team, individuals have put in strong efforts - Shaun Marsh most of all.
