United Nations condemns Israeli force against Palestinian civilians

Hundreds of Palestinians stage a protest in Ramallah against sanctions imposed by the Palestinian Authority on the Gaza Strip

The statement was issued Wednesday ahead of an emergency UN General Assembly meeting to vote on a resolution condemning Israel's "excessive use of force".

The vote at the General Assembly was 120 votes in favor, 8 votes against, and 45 abstentions, for the resolution entitled "Protection of the Palestinian civilian population".

The primary resolution was introduced by representatives in Turkey, on behalf of the Islamic Cooperation, and Algeria, on behalf of the Arab League.

Haley's comments came as the US blocked a Security Council resolution calling for a probe into the violence.

A similar Security Council resolution was vetoed earlier this month by the United States for being "fundamentally imbalanced" and "grossly one-sided", U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley said.

"The nature of this resolution clearly demonstrates that politics is driving the day".

Haley blasted the unamended resolution as "totally one-sided".

The Palestinians' U.N. ambassador is urging the General Assembly to adopt a resolution to address escalating violence in Gaza and "the crisis" of protecting civilians following the killing of more than 120 Palestinians by Israeli military fire.

"Advancing peace is not the goal of this resolution".

"We had more countries on the right side than the wrong side", Haley said.

Prior to voting on the full text, the assembly voted on a USA amendment to condemn Hamas.

"I have a simple message for those who support this resolution".

Haley had argued that the amendment proposed by the U.S. "It is about deterring further violence from taking place", he said.

Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour dismissed the U.S. amendments blaming Hamas as "games and gimmicks" and urged ambassadors not to be "fooled" by the USA proposal.

"We can not remain silent in the face of the most violent crimes and human rights violations being systematically perpetrated against our people", Mansour said. General Assembly President Miroslav Lajcak declared that under United Nations rules a two-thirds vote was needed so the amendment failed.

Prior to the vote, the United States attempted to add an amendment to the bill denouncing Palestinian political and militant group Hamas for its part in stoking violence between Israelis and Palestinians.

Arab and Islamic nations then made a decision to seek a vote on virtually the identical resolution at Wednesday's emergency meeting of the General Assembly, where there are no vetoes.

The U.S.' support for Israel during the recent uptick in violence on the Gaza-Israel border has been criticized by many human rights groups.

Human Rights Watch said Wednesday that Israel's use of lethal force against Palestinian demonstrators in the Gaza Strip in recent weeks may constitute war crimes.

Brett Bruen, a former Obama administration official and president of Global Situation Room, told CBS News at the United Nations on Wednesday that US actions in the Middle East are "costly for Israel, which has grown further isolated" as the USA irritates allies and emboldens adversaries. The US, Israel, Australia, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Togo and the Solomon Islands voted against the measure.

For the Palestinians, the resolution's key provision is a request to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to make proposals within 60 days "on ways and means for ensuring the safety, protection and well-being of the Palestinian civilian population under Israeli occupation", including on "an worldwide protection mechanism".

Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon told the assembly that Hamas is conducting "a violent assault on Israel" and aims to seize its main cities of Haifa, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

"For some, attacking Israel is their favorite political sport".
