'I have already won': Rebel Wilson confident ahead of Bauer appeal decision

Rebel Wilson was initially awarded $4.5 million

Magazine publisher Bauer Media has had a major win in its appeal over Rebel Wilson's defamation suit and will now have to pay the actress $600,000.

The Sydney Morning Herald said the articles "painted her as a serial liar".

Victorian Supreme Court Justice John Dixon subsequently awarded Wilson $650,000 in general damages and $3.97 million in special damages, saying the defamation was "unprecedented in this country" and warranted "a substantial damages award to vindicate her and nail the lie".

The Melbourne appeals court of three judges slashed Wilson's 4.6 million Australian dollar ($3.5 million) payout to AU$600,000 ($454,000).

But Bauer Media successfully challenged that finding in the Court of Appeal in Melbourne.

The original damages sum awarded to Ms Wilson last September was the largest defamation payment ever ordered by an Australian court, and several media organisations questioned whether the decision set a new precedent for defamation payments.

But the Court of Appeal found there was no basis for her to be awarded financial damages for the potential loss of roles, setting aside the economic damages entirely.

She wrote that she had "already won the case" and that the case was more about clearing her name than making money.

Wilson's lawyers had argued she missed out on film roles between mid-2015 and the end of 2016 due to the "grapevine effect" the articles had within the film industry.

"I'm away on location in Europe filming right now", she tweeted.

The judge who determined the initial payout had relied on testimony from Wilson and two Hollywood agents that the articles, which were not published in the United States, still would have influenced movie industry decision makers, the appeals court judges added.

The actress she won her defamation case against Bauer Media in September past year. Bauer Media immediately said it would appeal the record-breaking payment.

Wilson planned to donate her damages award to charity.
