Canada parliament condemns U.S. attack on Trudeau, country simmers

The G7 Summit runs from 8 to 9 June in Charlevoix Canada

Frank McKenna, former premier and Canadian ambassador to the United States, said President Donald Trump's treatment of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was "appalling" and "outrageous".

After Trump had left the summit in Quebec he rounded on Justin Trudeau personally, suggesting the Canadian Prime Minister was "very dishonest and weak" and "acts hurt when called out".

Trudeau reiterated his objections to Trump's imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada, Mexico and the European Union and his own plans to introduce retaliatory measures targeting US products.

Trudeau had been saying the same thing for several weeks, but Trump apparently found it reprehensible to repeat the message on the eve of his historic summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. One of its early tweets read: numerous jokes were directed at the XX-year-old Canadian President, who bore the brunt of a twitter attack from President Trump and his White House advisers.

The prime minister's silence on Monday came in sharp contrast to a roar of disapproval among Canadian politicians, who banded together across party lines to denounce Trump's attack and praise the bilateral and trading relationship between the two neighbours.

"We strive to reduce tariff barriers, non-tariff barriers and subsidies", the statement said, which came despite Washington appearing intent on taking more punitive steps on trade.

Peter Navarro, President Trump's top trade adviser, went on Fox News Sunday yesterday and declared there's a "special place in hell" for leaders like Trudeau. And chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow accused Trudeau of betrayal and stabbing Trump in the back.

Trump's personal attorney splits with his own legal team
Trump has acknowledged that he reimbursed Cohen for the payment, but he has denied that the affair with Daniels took place. A federal judge has set a June 15 deadline to determine which records from that raid fall under attorney-client privilege.

"We're going to fix that situation", he said.

Trudeau said he had told Trump "it would be with regret but it would be with absolute clarity and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applied to us". The French presidency had earlier condemned "fits of anger".

The Post wrote that Canada "has every right to be insulted".

That statement was followed by another of Trump's Tweets in which he further criticised close all Canada and its leadership for profiting from their trade agreement with the US.

On board Air Force One, an AFP reporter was told that Trump had approved the agreement, only to be told later of the tweets. "They're gonna do what they can to defend and protect their country, just like we're trying to do the same thing with ours". The European Union also attends. Trump said in a second tweet. In the end, that language stayed in and it was only on climate change that no consensus was reached.

The president recently imposed sweeping tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, fulfilling a campaign promise.
