Toddlers Consume More 'Added Sugar' Than The Recommended Amount For Adults

Eating foods with these extra sugars as a young child can influence diet choices later in life, researchers said. Even more, the trend is aggravating as they grow up, says the CDC.

Children love sugar, but they may be getting fed so much more than a healthy amount, according to a new study.

The researchers got the data from the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found, on average, toddlers eat more than seven teaspoons of added sugar a day.

However, the study's results could be unintentionally biased as it was based on parents' answers, thus, it can't be taken as a 100% conclusive study. However, the scientists behind the study are now planning on analyzing the products with added sugar that kids usually consume.

Americans love affair with sugar starts at a very early age as many toddlers are consuming added sugar at levels that exceed the maximum amount recommended for adults, a new study has found. The research titled "Consumption of added sugars among USA infants aged 6-23 months, 2011-2014" was presented at the American Society for Nutrition annual meeting in Boston on June 10. This exceeded the daily recommended limit (for added sugar) which is 6 teaspoons or less for children aged 2 to 19 as well as adult women.

There is no chemical difference between natural sugars in fruits, vegetables, and milk, and processed sugars. "These data may be relevant to the upcoming 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans". Added sugar consumption was highest among non-Hispanic black children and lowest among non-Hispanic white children in kids aged between 12 and 23 months. Further studies are planned that will better evaluate the specific sources of added sugar children are eating.

Dr. Herrick said the easiest method of reducing added sugars in one's own and one's children's diets is to choose foods that do not contain added sugars such as fruits and vegetables.

About 85 percent of them were found to eat added sugar in a given day. Between the ages of six to 11 months, just over 60% of babies ate added sugar on a given day, at around under one teaspoon on average.

Parents of 800 children aged 6 to 23 months were questioned on what their child's "added sugar" consumption was in a 24-hour period. Regardless of the recommendations, most people in the US eat more than this limit, research shows.
