Japan: Knife rampage aboard bullet train kills 1, injures 2

Man stabbed to death, 2 women injured on bullet train

A man was killed and two others were injured in a stabbing incident on a Shinkansen bullet train in Japan Saturday night, local police said.

Police said, they apprehended the 22-year old man, after the train made an unscheduled stop at Odawara station following an emergency call.

In the clearest sign that the stabbings were random and indiscriminate, Kojima reportedly told police: "I was feeling frustrated - anyone would do".

The other two victims are women in their 20s, and suffered from injuries to their heads and shoulders, among other areas, the Sankei Shimbun said, adding that their conditions have stabilised.

Police are investigating the motive of the attack. Another knife was found on the train.

Some were carrying seat cushions to protect themselves.

The suspect left home in Okazaki last December, according to his 81-year-old grandmother, who lived with him.

"I have always been anxious about him", the woman said in a telephone interview with Kyodo News early Sunday.

According to the Kanagawa prefectural police and other sources, three passengers on the train were attacked. She had been calling his mobile phone recently but could not reach him.

The fire, which also occurred on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line, prompted operators to increase station patrols and install security cameras on trains, though checking baggage has been viewed as impractical due to the huge numbers of passengers.

The incident took place on a bullet train travelling west in the south of Tokyo, which was carrying 880 passengers.
