Trump adviser says Trudeau 'stabbed us in the back' at G7 summit

US signs G-7 declaration calling for reduction of tariffs after tense summit with allies

Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland spoke against the United States over its tariffs on steel and aluminum on Friday during the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Charlevoix, Quebec.

The attack on a longtime ally and its leader drew sharp criticism.

In an interview Sunday on German public television, Merkel also says European leaders won't be "taken advantage of" on trade.

Trump reportedly floated the idea of dropping import barriers altogether but also warned the US could cut off trade entirely with countries that didn't agree to certain rule changes.

Trump in Singapore on Monday escalated his war of words with Canada and the European Union in a pair of tweets.

The U.S. does maintain some of the lowest tariffs in the world - if not the lowest - with an average levy of 2.8% on all goods, according to a ranking from the World Trade Organization. Minimum is 17B. Tax Dairy from us at 270%.

"Not fair to the PEOPLE of America!"

The U.S. had a $17.5 billion goods trade deficit with Canada - its second-largest goods trading partner - in 2017, though it did have a goods and services trade surplus of $8.4 billion past year with its fellow North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) member, according to data from the U.S. Trade Representative's office. "We make our commitments and keep them".

U.S. President Donald Trump throws the G7's efforts to show a united front into disarray after he became angry with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and instructed his representatives NOT to endorse the summit's joint communique.

"Germany pays 1 percent (slowly) of GDP towards North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, while we pay 4 percent of a much larger GDP".

"We protect Europe (which is good) at great financial loss, and then get unfairly clobbered on trade".

The spat drew in Germany and France, which sharply criticized Trump's decision to abruptly withdraw his support for a Group of Seven communique hammered out at a Canadian summit on Saturday, accusing him of destroying trust and acting inconsistently.

There's also a swaggering ego at the centre here: Trump has been talking about how he hasn't needed to prepare for his meeting with Kim and will "know" nearly instantly whether the North Korean is serious about the talks.

"I understand the president was upset", Feinstein told CNN. "We don't think that that is a useful or productive way to do business".

She said that she still believes Trump shares the principled stance of the G7 on "many issues". The president responded on Twitter, while en route to Singapore calling Trudeau, "Very dishonest and weak". Can't do it in person.

After leaving the G7 summit, Trump said the USA was also exploring new tariffs for automobile imports.

Merkel said she was disappointed that Italy's new prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, endorsed Trump's call on Russian Federation before consulting with other European powers. He had other things, bigger things, on his plate in Singapore.

But unity was torn apart when the United States president took exception to Mr Trudeau calling USA policy "insulting". "That will not stand".

Trump chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow said: "He really kind of stabbed us in the back".

Kudlow called Trudeau's press conference a "sophomoric, political stunt for domestic consumption". Trudeau made an error.

The comment echoed that of Arizona Republican Senator John McCain, who on Friday said in a statement that Putin "chose to make Russian Federation unworthy of membership in the G8 by invading Ukraine and annexing Crimea".

"To be honest with you, Prime Minister Trudeau, I respect".

"PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that. he 'will not be pushed around.' Very dishonest & weak", he added.

"We need Russian Federation for disarmament talks" and for discussions about both Ukraine and Syria, Merkel said. "We're the closest partners in the world and you don't want to see a dispute over one particular issue poison everything".

US President Donald Trump's revocation of support for a joint communique with other leaders at the G7 summit was "sobering and a little depressing", German Chancellor Angela Merkel said late Sunday, June 10.
