Senate narrowly passes net neutrality CRA, sending fight to the House

Sen. Maggie Hassan hears from employees of Stonyfield Farms and members of New England's farming community about how the repeal of net neutrality rules would affect their business

Deemed "the most important vote for the internet in the history of the US Senate" by author Senator Ed Markey, a Democrat from MA, the resolution would reverse the FCC's December 2017 repeal of net neutrality rules that were put in place in 2015.

Democrats in the Senate could prevail in a vote as they have at least 50 votes with all of their party on board, plus Sen. The bill is now headed to the House of Representatives, where Democrats must convince at least 25 Republicans to cross the aisle in a similar simple majority vote.

Senate Democrats, joined by three Republicans, on Wednesday pushed through a measure meant to revive Obama-era internet rules that pushed equal treatment for all web traffic, though opposition in the House and the White House seems insurmountable. Passage in the Senate would "send a clear message to American families that we support them, not the special interest agenda of President Trump and his broadband baron allies", said Sen.

The internet should be kept free and open like our highways, accessible and affordable to every American, regardless of ability to pay. Alaska's Lisa Murowski, Louisiana's John Kennedy, and Maine's Susan Collins supported to bring the vote to 52-47.

But Pai did so despite widespread support for the rules; a survey taken around the time of the FCC's December vote found that an overwhelming majority of Americans supported keeping them in place, including most Republican voters. This vote wasn't about winning today, but winning for net neutrality in the long run.

The United States Senate has just voted to restore net neutrality regulations, which the FCC voted in December to eliminate. Namely, the measure has to go through a Republican majority House and President Donald Trump.

Capitalistpig Hedge Fund manager Jonathan Hoenig explains why the Federal Communications Commission's to repeal the Obama-era net neutrality ruling could actually benefit the internet, despite contrary outcries from some companies and individuals.

The legislative victory is fleeting because the House does not intend to take similar action, but Democrats are planning to carry the political fight over Internet access into the 2018 midterms.

Many popular websites and companies, including Twitter, Etsy and Netflix, support net neutrality. Calling on Congress to reject the resolution in favor of developing bipartisan legislation to replace the FCC rules, the groups argued that the CRA does "nothing" to address the data mining and other practices of tech companies who have come under growing scrutiny for their role in facilitating the spread of online misinformation and harassment. It also said last week that consumers demand strong and enforceable net neutrality rules on internet providers.
