Michigan State Settles Sex Cases For $500 Million

Larry Nassar Survivors and Michigan State University announce they have successfully resolved existing litigation and agreed in principle to a $500 million global settlement

According to the lawyers, $NZ615 milion will be paid to the claimants, and another $NZ110 would be set aside for any future allegations against Nassar and the university. The complaint is related to a pending criminal case against Strampel, who is accused of failing to properly supervise Nassar and of his own sexual misconduct involving students.

Trustee Brian Breslin says Michigan State recognizes the "need for change" when it comes to sexual assault awareness and prevention.

In February, Nassar was sentenced to 175 years in prison for the systematic abuse of female athletes under his care going back to the 1990s at both Michigan State, where Nassar was an employee, and USA Gymnastics. More that 150 women spoke at Nassar's sentencing hearing, alleging that he had abused them while claiming to be providing medical treatment.

The university and lawyers for 332 victims announced the deal after negotiating privately with the help of a mediator. I am thankful that the litigation phase is over so that my sisters and I can move forward.

But the settlement does not in any way make the way MSU has treated Nassar survivors over the last 18 months - and, for that matter, the two decades before that - acceptable or forgivable.

Prior to today's settlement announcement ESPN said that it was awarding one of the network's most prestigious honors, the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, to Nassar victims. She says she is also disappointed that a resolution hasn't been reached with other organizations such as USA Gymnastics.

Martha Karolyi told U.S. news program "Dateline NBC" last month that Nassar conned her and her husband in much the same way that he conned the parents and coaches of the girls he abused. If he is ever released he faces up to 175 years in state jail for sexual assault. Since that time, even more accusers have stepped forward, which accounts for the larger number of people covered by the Michigan State agreement.

The victims filed lawsuits in federal court in Grand Rapids, Mich., and state courts in California.

The $500 million settlement only applies to MSU and school officials who were sued.

Nassar pleaded guilty to assaulting victims with his hands under the guise of treatment.

"Michigan State is pleased that we have been able to agree in principle on a settlement that is fair to the survivors of Nassar's crimes", said Robert Young, special counsel to the university. He built an global reputation while working at the same time for USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians.

Rachael Denhollander was the first person to publicly accuse Nassar of abuse, which opened the door for hundreds more to come forward, including Olympic gymnasts Aly Raisman, Simone Biles and McKayla Maroney.
