Google partially rolls back Chrome 66's autoplay changes

Google rolls back autoplay ban in Chrome 66 after borking web-based games

Meanwhile, the implementation delay is created to give "Web Audio API developers (e.g. gaming, audio applications, some RTC features) more time to update their code".

Along with Site Isolations trials, Symantec distrust and a slew of bug fixes, the most front-facing feature in version 66 was easily Chrome's new autoplay policies for embedded media on websites.

The blocking feature, announced in January, aimed to remove loud, sudden and unwanted videos from the web, which automatically played when a browser launched - and also stopped a series of apps and games from playing audio for alerts and other elements. Unfortunately, the update had some unexpected side effects, making some browser-based games completely unplayable. Developers should update their code based on the recommendations at: "https://developers.google.com/web/updates/2017/09/autoplay-policy-changes#webaudio".

It's important to note that the change only applies to the Web Audio API.

One of Google's project managers for Chrome, John Pallett, said: "We've updated Chrome 66 to temporarily remove the autoplay policy for the Web Audio API". For that reason, the current Chrome version 66 will no longer automatically mute Web Audio objects.

In the latest Google Chrome update, the browser attempted to tackle sites auto playing video with sound once and for all. Affected developers will have until then to add a few lines to their code, thus re-enabling the auto-muted audio when a user first interacts with the page.

Pallett urged developers to prepare for Chrome 70 by following its autoplay instructions for the Web Audio API. Google now plans on re-introducing the restrictions in Chrome 70, but the Chrome team is looking into other options as well. This was after Google acknowledged the complaints from various web-users related to the auto-play ads which were not only bothering a user but also use up the hardware resources along with consuming a huge amount of data.

"I believe Chrome could find a policy which accommodates developers while still protecting the principle users should explicitly authorize websites to play sound", developer Andi McClure writes in the Chromium thread.
